Why do villagers sometimes say they will stay when they ask to move and you say yes? The villager I wanted to move just did this. Noooooo.....

It's something about jocks for me. They have to prove to you that they are cool

I read somewhere that the first option is always a "yes" or "stay" and the second option is always "no" or "leave". Although I'm not 100% how accurate this is.
If you don't have a good friendship with said villager, sometimes telling them to go makes them think, "Hey, wait. We should get to know each other first and strengthen our friendship!" Which is so annoying, especially if you need them out ^^

Just to make you mad as far as I can tell!

If it's not too late you can quit without saving, then when you get back in game the villager will ping to move again and they might agree to move this time.

Well, I kinda just did a trade and it saved when someone visited. Oopsies. Most of my villagers are now dreamies, but I still want 1 or 2 to move so I can finish cycling villagers to get Roscoe back.

This, except you don't have to talk to them again, you can ignore them completely and they'll still move on the day they said.

Yeah I'm afraid it's too late now. I still wish you luck in getting the villager you want out to move though, and I can confirm that both Stacie's and Reese's information are correct too.

Both of these are partially true. The first option is always "stay," and the second option should be a "leave," but sometimes the villager ends up deciding to stay anyway.

In my experience, it doesn't really matter what your friendship level is with the villager. If your friendship level is low, they will say, "We aren't good enough friends yet. I can't move now!" However, if the villager is good friends with you, they may say, "No! We're so close, you'll miss me when I'm gone. I can't move now!" Every villager I've had move out had a high friendship level, but every one took a few resets for them to finally agree (I know you can just ignore them, but I don't like doing that). The point is that it is pretty random what they will say, so resetting/ignoring is honestly the best way to go.
