Question about friends

Ok, I admit it. I’m old, cranky, and don’t understand the technology you whippersnappers use. Google has failed me. I need help!
I have some very lovely people that I owe some items to, but due to time zones and internet issues, we are unable to meet up. I would like to mail the items to them, but I can not for the life of me figure out how the friend thing works. I added the switch codes to the friend list on the home menu, but how do I get them into my friend list in the game?

You have to play with them first, either you visit them or they visit you, before they will be added to the friend list in game. I dont think there’s any way to mail stuff to someone if you’ve never played together.
