I just placed tiles over my town plaza... and now I'm wondering if Redd etc can still place their tents there? Or do they stop coming if you put tiles in the plaza? I'll probably end up removing them.
Also, I shot down a balloon and the present disappeared into the tile. I don't suppose I'll tile a large amount of my town. Also, do fossils appear underneath them?

No, fossils don't appear under them and anything that falls on the tile is going to disappear or gets moved. If Redd/Katrina or tourneys come they will remove the path under them.
Redds tent will unfortunately make the tiles disappear so you will continuously have to keep updating them. A lot of people dont cover the entire plaza for this reason because after a while it begins to get tiring.
Any object (such as fruit or balloon presents) will disappear if they land on a tile. Its pretty annoying and I hope they fix it i the new games!
Nothing can grow on top of or underneath you tiles including fossils and plants.
The bright side is they make navigating a lot easier, they can help keep things organised, the can fill up empty spaces with patterns of water or with designs or w/e, and they make your town look a lot prettier in some cases.(of course different tiles are more pleasing than others)
I had my entire plaza cobblestoned to match the stones outside your retail/train station in one giant continuous path around town but it got tiring FAST when an event like holiday or Katrina/Redd would visit and I'd have to sit there and think about which tile goes where and switch alts cuz they didn't all fit into one character sheet. Eventually I just gave up on replacing them and sure my plaza looks ugly with the randomly missing tiles but it saves my headache of replacing it every 3-5 days (or minutes since I time travel lol)
Redd and all those events that come will just erase where the patterns are under them. With the balloons they will just disappear out of nowhere unfortunately!
