Great question! Personally, I'm happy with the flow of NH so far and I don't miss stuff yet. Generally I'm pretty optimistic that all the fullness of NL and more will be added in eventually, and I'm happy to wait and see! Of course I know that's not everyone, not by a long shot haha... I don't know that I'd prefer this style over NL, but the thrill of receiving updates has I guess some psychological effect on me and when an update comes it's like Christmas morning even though I'd been generally more deprived of features than I was in NL even pre-Welcome amiibo. And I never played Welcome amiibo...
To add, I guess what also keeps me positive about NH is that it has been so long since I've played NL. I didn't come in with the expectations I might have had if I remembered more from my time in NL, I just expected it to be a wonderful and enjoyable game, and for me it is.
I like that they are stretching out updates to keep us excited and interested in the game. I just wish features that were already in past AC games were included in the base version of the game.
I would much rather have a complete game in a cartridge than having just the shell of a game that would never have a complete physical version because of the way they chose to deal with updates, events and holidays.
I have Street Fighter V. Been there, done that. I don't like this model. It's not good for the preservation of the game. It's not good for consumers when it's all said and done, even if it doesn't look that way now.
The updates idea I think it's brilliant, as it keeps the game fresh for everyone (while I don't have anything against TT, as I do it myself - between months that already passed - to move out villagers, I understand that some people may be too hyped or lack control in terms of spoilers). But I also don't understand why is there a lack of items/sets that were in previous games.
I agree that they'll eventually add if not all, most of them, but when they release said updates I'm going to feel them empty, since I expected half of the item of that update to be already in the game. But that's just my opinion.
And as someone who likes to buy physical copies, as it not only allows me to have a neat collection in my room, but to gift them to my family/ friends if at some point I don't use the game anymore (I don't think I'll do it with AC, is one of the games I most reset and replay), this kind of practice... At this point why do they even do the physical copies? I feel like they are slowly forcing us to digital? ^^U
I wish there were more events or dates we knew about that were coming up. Bigger events then say a small maze, or more of those type of events! So more events present that we knew about but also the updates with micro-events is neat. So in general, I like it how it is, but wish there was more communication as to when things were happened
When I buy a game, I like it to be the full game. I understand why Nintendo are doing it this way, but it doesn’t change the fact that it sucks. I nearly put the game down and didn’t pick it back up again cause of the way Nintendo decided they were gonna release it’s data. All the frustration and upset I felt when the game was released could have so easily been avoid he Nintendo, heaven forbid, actually released a finished and full game.
Both. I love the idea of (free) updates, it keeps the game fresh and adds some spice & surprises. It also makes sense for a game like AC, since it does give an additional reason to keep playing on the long run.
But it shouldn't be used as an excuse to release unfinished games and just slap it on an update later on. A game shouldn't have to rely on its updates to be good. (This is not targeting NH in particular, just a general statement.)
I like the updates, I just wish they were a bit more frequent. That being said, they're missing a whole bunch of features from previous games that just seems to be gone for no reason... seasonal event stuff I understand, but not knowing if we need space for a lot more buildings makes me sorta cautious to do much to my island.
I'm holding out on making any hard judgement right now. It really depends on the quality of updates and we've only had like... what, two major updates so far?
Although, I have to admit, I'm pretty wary of the update system overall. I've played plenty of games where the updates were pretty crap, and could've easily just been included in the base game. In regards to ACNH, I think some features (like art) should've just been included in the base game, like it was in NL. (IMO, comparing these two base games, even if they're generations apart, is fair to me.)
It kind of reminds me of the way they went with pokemon swsh. They took out a lot of features that were in older games to begin with and added them in later as "dlc" or "new" things. I don't think I'd be as salty to admit I dislike this kind of model if I hadn't seen how other games turn out later (and it never turns out well, usually).
While it's justifiable of the direction they're trying to do with NH (updates, keep players going on as a regular function), I personally don't like it.
