We always open them in the morning on Christmas Day. Though I tend to take sneak peek into what's in my stocking in my room (because we have Christmas stockings full of presents in our rooms as well as presents downstairs) before anyone else is even awake. The hype is just too real then. And anyway, the presents downstairs in the living room are always better than what's in my stocking, so idc about spoiling the surprise for some of my presents. Of course, I'd never go downstairs to see what I got because 1. They're wrapped up so unwrapping them would kinda give it away, 2. I'd probably be too loud, and 3. It'd ruin the surprise for the best presents.
My family always gets together and hangs out/opens presents on Christmas Eve. I love it. My dad makes a fire, my mom makes little appetizers and we have some drinks and play games...it's probably one of my favorite days of the year!
As my sister and I are both adults now, it's not often we are together as a family, even though we all live relatively close to one another. So, I really treasure times like Christmas Eve :>
The earliest I open my gifts are on Christmas Eve because I go to my grandma's house and she usually can't come to our house for Christmas, so I open gifts from her there. I open most of my gifts on Christmas morning, and one of my aunts always has us open gifts from her on New Year's Eve.
My birthday is right next to Christmas so my family will be like "here this is your birthday present and Christmas presents" but sometimes they'll just give me more money to buy more ****
Christmas is a 3 day event in my family. We start on Christmas Eve, by visiting some relatives that we don't get a chance to see more than a few times a year, and opening the Christmas/birthday presents (my birthday is 9 days after Christmas, so I usually get birthday presents on Christmas).
Then there's Christmas, where we have the main event. My sister and I open our presents, then our presents, then we get ready for the big day. Everyone in our close family comes over for dinner and opening gifts. It usually lasts for 6 hours. Food and desert and presents and more food and more deserts and me hiding in my room because the amount of people over is giving me a panic attack.
Then the Saturday closest to Christmas, my sister and I go to our dad's house. More presents and pie are had. Then I can FINALLY rest!
Nice to see my family isn't the only family that opens presents on Christmas Eve, I haven't met another family that does it and I've never really known why we do it that way. We all eat a big dinner then we sit around, the kids pass them all out, then we all open everything.
