Hi hi, this is probably a very noobish question, and i've seen a lot of people write about plot resetting so that they get their dreamie villager settled in a desirable location on your town map. However, I tried looking it up on how to do it but it kinda confuses me. If someone could explain how to plot reset or the fundamentals of it i would so greatly appreciate it because I so far have 3 dreamies in my town (and didn't plot reset but luckily they chose spots that don't bother me) but i'm worried for the remaining dreamies I want in my town to move in a bad spot so yup. I don't mind long paragraph responses but just to explain how you do it and how many days do you TT before you do it?
Thanks in advance!! ^.^

You don't TT.
When you pick up a villiger the next day, you open a new save file. You create someone and walk around the town. If the plot is in a bad space, you go to home and exit without saving. Then after that you try it again and again till they are in a spot you like, then you save it and when you open the save file again you ask Isabella for 'something else' and there will be a option to delete your house, delete it and it's back to the place you like and you can open your mayor :). Hope I helped! Ask if any more questions :)

Basically, loading up your town (like when Isabelle is loading your town) also saves the game, so if say, on the 8th of july you loaded up your mayor at all, the day would be saved, so everything (the campsite villager, number of flowers spawned, weed numbers, etc etc) would be set for the day. so on july 8th if someone was moving in and you loaded up your mayor, wherever they put their house is pretty much set and you can't change it

plot resetting works because when you create a new character, until you place your tent down or whatever, the game can't be saved. so if you turned your ds off before you placed your house down and got your town card thing and everything from isabelle, the day wouldn't be saved/set

to plot reset,
1. on a day where you're expecting someone to place down the plot for their house (the fence thingy) DO NOT load up any of your characters
-if you need to TT to their moving date, you'll have to change the 3DS' clock in the settings menu (on the home menu) rather than the game's clock to do that. Changing the games clock would require loading the town!
2. create a new character, name it whatever you want, go through the train journey and all that stuff
3. Once you reach the town, run round and look for a house plot-fence-thing
4. If you don't like the location of the house plot, turn the 3ds off/return to the home menu of the 3ds, and start again at step 2. everytime you create a new character in this way the house plot should be randomized
5. if you DO like the placement of the house, then continue the begginer sequence thing where you go to isabelle and she tells you to go to nook and you get a house and then talk to isabelle again and everything... at the end of it the game will save and you'll finally be able to save on that character
6. thats it! you can just delete the character now if you want. if you load up the game on any other character the villager's house plot will now be int he place you picked

warning: it's very tedious!!

Edit: Also I forgot to mention... the days on acnl start at 6am... it's handy to know

Same as other posters really - but I'll post as I've typed it:

I've seen threads where players start up with the mayor just before the start of the day (ie before 6am), I don't understand why they do and sometimes it goes wrong for players (as I think the clock turns over 6am on them).

I keep it simple.
If you are 9 villagers or under and you want to see where a new villager may plot, then you have to plot reset every day, as a 10th villager can come from streetpass, wifi visits/visited as well as the tent). A 9th villager can be brought in randomly by the game as well as the above.

The new day starts at 6am.
The first load of the day (whenever that is) has to be with with you starting a new save file ie starting a new character, looking around town to see if you have a new plot & if you like the villager & their location.
If you do like what you see then go ahead get to the point where you save the game & save the game
The plot & villager are then set & you can load with mayor.

If you don't like the location or the villager (they can change if its a random move in) then press home and start again. ie reset the game without saving. Restart by setting up with a new character again.

If you don't get a plot when you load with the new character, you can't unfortunately think you are safe for the day - because when you load with your mayor you can get a villager plot appearing. (tho you didn't have one with your alt) You have to 'set' the game ie if you like what you see when you are ingame with your new alt - save the game to keep things as they are.
And delete them later on in the day (if you want to).

You don't need to TT to do this.

Its exactly how everyone has said. I have plot reset for all 10 dreamies in my second town. Nothing went wrong, and they all plotted exactly where I wanted them, with minimum fuss and awkwardness (:

If, the day before I have been to a town and adopted someone in boxes, I will leave the game alone until after 6am the next day. When I begin, I start a new character and do the plot resetting. Then I start up on my mayor. I don't try to TT to move them in faster or do anything else, in case it affects the plot mechanics or just messes up for some reason. I guess I like to be super careful until those dreamies are where I want them!

Well the way I do it I start off the following day at 5.58 am then save and end it. Making sure not to get distracted and that it's AM and not PM because I've made those mistakes.
Create a new save file and don't do whatever it is that you are told to do, which is go to the town hall and speak with Isabelle. Instead, wander around town in search for the plot. If you are unsatisfied with this plot you may quit and restart the process. If you do, then you go to the town hall and save then delete that character.
But, be warned depending on how picky you are with where they place their plot, it can take hours, days up to a week until you are satisfied. Plot resetting requires patience, and you might want to be doing other things at the same time such as listening to a podcast to keep your mind off the frustration.

Since everyone has already posted the way it generally works, here's some other stuff:

If you're plot resetting over several days, you can use your system clock to travel back in time to stay within the moving date.

I usually watch some TV that doesn't really interest me to get through the boring Rover dialouge at the start - you might want to do something else while plot resetting, but don't do something that's really interesting, because I've gotten so carried away that I loaded up my mayor there some times. That's the only thing where you can go wrong once you're in the progress, really.

Oh, and a little trick that can speed it up a bit: you can place cheap public work projects into spots where you definitely don't want your villager to move in. Even if you only place the gyroid and don't pay it off, villagers won't move into that spot.

Since I've been plot resetting for every villager I have, I know the spot(s) they move into more frequently, like half of the resets, (yeah, that exists, though it depends on your town I guess) and always place a gyroid there, which makes the whole thing two times faster.

Good luck!

Just do what everyone has said it is worth it tho when I did it a villager was outside my house 4 times

Wow thank you guys so much! I really appreciate all of the hefty responses! Now i really understand it, thank you guys so much! Will definitely try it for my next dreamie move in <3
