Pinging from villagers

The 5 minute out-of-side trick to get villagers to ping doesn't always work.

Sometimes I wait longer than 5 minutes and still no villager would ping me. Why is that?

I purposefully fill my inventory and carry almost no bells with me. Is that a reason why they won't ping?

If you play long they'll hold in their pings unless you talk to one telling you to take a break, then they unleash their pings. Sometimes this wont happen most of the time.
