People setting themselves up for disappointment? Mini Rant~

It would be nice if Nintendo would let us know would to expect for the next year. I don’t like knowing what’s in the datamines because it could change or not mean what people think.
I dont think Nintendo need to tell us anything and I do think that we as a community should stop expecting anything.
However the datamines has caused issue in the sense of knowing if space needs to be saved for brewster or not.

There's an area I want to rework but any day we might get a new building... or not. It might go in the museum. Or not.

I dont know and its a little annoying

nintendo has historically been a pretty radio silent company. so if anything, it'd of been more surprising out of chraracter for them if they had been more openly public about their update plans

It would be out of character for them to say anything which is why I said that. I don’t see them letting us know. I agree they don’t need to tell us anything. They don’t even need to give us anything more if they don’t want to. I think it might help people to know if something they want will eventually come and if it’s not coming they can accept it now instead of continuing to hope for it.
I have set aside a place if Brewster does come. It can easily be turned into something else if he doesn’t. It would be nice to know if more buildings is even a possibility.

This is just another phase because it's the 20th anniversary. We had this phase during the 1st anniversary too. It will die down eventually. Fans are just getting impatient, and that's understandable considering they usually give us a date on when the next update will drop. It's like every time Nintendo has a direct, some fans always expect a new Smash character (even on the Indie World & Partner Showcase directs *facepalm*).

There will be an update coming before May 1st (or before April 23rd for Nature Day). They need to unlock May Day, Museum Day and all May seasonal shopping items. What else it will include, we don't know. It could be 1.10. It could be 2.0. But Nintendo isn't done supporting the game, and that's a fact.

Also, the 2021 fiscal year had just started. They are fully aware that the game is missing content, and they are fully aware of the backlash once they end support without "finishing" the game. They will want to maintain the games' success for it's second year.

Furthermore, Nintendo is participating in E3 this year. If nothing big comes in the updates for May, then probably it will drop in June.

There's nothing wrong about expressing their opinion about the game's direction in general really. I just don't like it to become a platform to attack others because of players disagreeing with each other. I do understand your intent though. You just wanted someone here to hear your voice about how some players are treating the game updates and Nintendo like dirt.

My simple advice is to steer yourself away from those conversations if it's becoming too unhealthy for you. :)

i don't think you should feel bad, i dont see reason why anyone would be mad :0
I've been attacked myself whenever I try to point out flaws in the game and yet some people attack me because they think I am "hating" on the game when I'm not.

I think another problem is that some people seem to expect the updates to fundamentally change the nature of the game, instead of enhancing what ACNH already is. I see people hoping that the updates will bring back Kapp’n and that he will bring players to a market street, like in NL, or to the City like in CF. I see people hoping that every single furniture set from NL will be “brought back,” or that an island full of mini games will be added.

The focus of NH, from what I can tell, seems to be on the building-up of a formerly deserted island. It’s a “back to basics” approach that draws heavily on the GC original. It’s not fair to expect the updates to slowly transform the game into NL. It’s fine to hope for that, if that’s what you want, but once those hopes subtly transform into expectations in your own mind, you’re probably just setting yourself up for major disappointment here.

Personally, I’ve looked at every update as enhancing what NH already is, rather than as an opportunity to “bring back” old or “missing” features. Because of that perspective, I have been happy and satisfied with every update so far!

yeah it makes sense to be upset when they drop an update and it's sub-par, but getting mad about a non-existent update is just dumb lol

unfortunately, for myself personally, ACNH itself is pretty sub-par in its features, and what you're saying is that updating the game isn't going to bring back those missing features (rather updates serve to "enhance" the already existing game). in that sense I suppose NH will never reach the same level of enjoyment that I got from NL or the OG. I know that NH has the potential to be so much better than it is.

This. To clarify: I think most of the updates up to this point have been super disappointing and I’m not trying to defend this sub-par excuse of an Animal Crossing game in any way. It’s just that I think it’s a bit over the top to be upset over something that was never said to exist in the first place...

It's a game about talking animals and watering flowers. How could anyone get heated over it?

I don't care what Nintendo gives us in the next updates. I'd rather just float along, giving appreciation for what Nintendo does provide.

Like I said- talking animals and watering flowers.

the updates haven't been too bad, though I'm quite disappointed with the Festivale update cause the rainbow feather isn't an actual rainbow anymore. that's just a little nitpick but they could've literally made it look exactly like it did in City Folk and New Leaf and I would've been perfectly content. so far the only update I've been really impressed with is the Super Mario update (though that shouldn't come as a surprise from me). but other than that the game feels pretty lacking, in quantity (compared to past titles) as well as quality (the villager dialogue is literally the worst thing ever, just to name an example).

I mean who knows, maybe some people do enjoy New Horizons more than, or just as much as, New Leaf or any of the older games. I just know that I put 900+ hours into New Leaf and I'm still playing the OG game after 13 years, and I've only played New Horizons for about 500 hours yet I feel like I'm done with it.

I agree with what you're saying, people are expecting way to much of Nintendo and are getting really disappointed as a result. But I also feel like Nintendo missed a huge marketing opportunity by not doing a surprise anniversary update, which I suppose is why so many people expected them to do it. Giving the game a huge update for its 1 year anniversary would have been awesome, especially because of how successful it was last year. It could have brought back players who might have stopped playing, and said thank you to the players who didn't stop playing. But I guess Nintendo is a corporation first and is just after money, which would explain why they seem to keep doing the bare minimum every update. At this point I have lost all respect for Nintendo and as a result I don't have hope at all anymore in each update, and keep my expectations are as low as they can go.

i honestly can't wait for the next big update as well but i really don't like expecting much especially if there aren't any official news from nintendo about an update to begin with... i mean it's okay to voice out disappointment but i hope they don't go and say they've been "scammed" when all they have are rumors and datamines...

I mean, at the same time, I completely understand the disappointment. We paid $60 for this one (not to mention, during a pandemic in which money has been tight for many of us), and then get called “ungrateful” for expecting the bare minimum from previous games to be there from the get-go. So far, the updates have really just added those basic features we’ve already played in past games, and very little actually new content.

My post was more about the people getting mad at Nintendo over the non-existent updates they made up in their heads. I do, however, 100% understand and agree with the disappointment with what the game currently is.

Yeah. I believe the issue is that people are treating datamines and rumors like they are official word from Nintendo. So they end up acting like they were promised something that Nintendo literally never said anything about.

I've been playing this game since launch and still play every day. I did take a break for a bit though.
I have around 1000 hours in this game. I have my original island still.

I have played new leaf a lot as well. But over several towns as I kept restarting. Because I would always feel I've seen everything the game has to offer after about 3 months. Then it became just too repetitive.

For me personally, new horizons is vastly superior to the earlier games and improves in nearly every way. I find little to no reason to play new leaf again and find it very hard to do so with all the improvements new horizons has brought to the table.

that's fair, if you enjoy it then that's fantastic! :)

I'll personally stick with my 13 year old Gamecube town lol.

This is, unfortunately, something that has happened since like the first month. People hype themselves without a reason and then get angry/disappointed/confused when Nintendo releases whatever they do.

While I agree that Nintendo could have better communication, I think it wouldn't help unless they provided a detailed roadmap of updates- which is pretty much impossible thanks to how Nintendo handles their games. For example, when the Direct hit on February 2020, they gave a pretty general roadmap of updates (listing the 5 major holidays) and afterwards, they listed a key image stating an upcoming update. Was that helpful in order to stop people from wildly hyping and speculating? No. Just look at all update threads here for examples- when Nintendo posted "hey, next update will add the Festivale event to the game", people here were so disappointed when the update trailer dropped and it told us that the next update would have the Festivale event added to the game.

Between people thinking datamines = "content they are withholding and will totally be added" (special shout-out to those who have harrassed dataminers because of that!), thinking Nintendo said things they didn't and having almost unrealistic expectations for the game (not saying all have those), you get a pretty good amount of vocal fans voicing their angry words every minute. This won't stop until the next game is announced or until people move on; the former is still years ahead and we all know people will wave their right to complain even 20 years later so...

While quality is highly, highly subjective, I'm curious about the quantity claim. I feel it's poking a dead horse, but numbers-wise, from what I see, NH has pretty much the same content than NL had at the same time (counting NL as the biggest content). For every lack of Brewster, minigames and less fruit, you have crafting, outdoor furniture and more flowers.

I mean in general it sucks that they've sacrificed things from the past to bring us new stuff instead of just bringing the old stuff back. I particularly mis the wider variety of fruits, and the violets (seemingly removed for no reason) were one of my favorite flowers in New Leaf. I also miss places like GracieGrace, Club LOL, Brewsters Cafe, the fortune shop, etc. I dont really think it was worth the sacrifice but that's my personal opinion.

I was a bit surprise that there was nothing at all, not even a little gift in our mailboxes or a special seasonal item for sale... I stopped trying to understand Nintendo a while ago. But I agree there's absolutely no reason to be mad or to bash out since nothing was ever promised. I think it's such a beloved game and we can't help to come up with possibilities for it, there's a big desire to play more but I myself feel a little bored. I mean, I enjoyed the heck out building my island and got way more than my money's worth, but I would love new possibilities, who wouldn't? I think some people just can't deal with their expectations
