Opinions on “ugly villagers”?

People say Moose is ugly. I don't understand. I think the mice villagers aren't remotely popular, anyway. But Moose? His facial expression screams, "You're kidding, right?" Oh well. 🤷‍♂️

It’s just that the hair doesn’t really work with some designs. Same as Monique the Cat. Or Maelle the Duck (which isn’t ugly, but still weird). It just doesn’t look right to me, sorry.

Also Gaston is Fine. He’s just an old Bunny. Nothing weird about him.

I don't really like to assign the label "ugly" to villagers. Sure, there are some that I dislike a lot, but that's a matter of opinion and doesn't at all mean that a villager is inherently ugly. So unless I'm talking about my own personal preferences, I'd rather say "popular"or "unpopular." I don't think that there is a single villager regarded as ugly by every single AC player on the planet and those who like very unpopular villagers aren't wrong if they think that they look appealing.
For example, I absolutely agree with people thinking Moose is ugly, but there's a difference between stating something as an opinion or stating it as fact and sometimes I find it very annoying if personal preference is regarded as a universal truth as long as it applys to a majority.

I think just like we have preferences for certain features in people, some villagers' appearances just don't resonate with us. It's so interesting because a villager I find hideous might be someone's dreamy, and my dreamy might be worthless/ugly to them!

So many people have told me Al is hideous, and while I don't personally have him, I really enjoy interacting with him on a friend's island. Sometimes villagers' personalities are great even if their physical features are kind of odd!

It’s not so much the looks but the interactions with a villager/islander.

My original “New Leaf” town includes the Normal frog Jambette, who has been considered one of the ugliest-looking in the game. She was there from Day #01. August 2013. I kept her throughout. Why? She’s a friend. She is a friend to my Mayor character Jill.

What Jambette lacked in physical looks she more than made up for in heart.

When it comes to this topic, I instantly recall past mentions of Dream Address visits in which towns had a lot of the same select characters who were comprising those villager-popularity lists in the top tier. That one could go from a specific Dream Address, mentioned by one forum member after another, and find a lot of the same cast of characters: Julian, Stitches, Diana, Marshal, and Merenge were really common.

Now that we have “New Horizons,” I am not conscious of having an island that may consist of however many popular villagers/islanders. It is about ones I want to experience. And about variety. Like having all villager personality categories. And, in addition to Jambette, I like other “uglies” such as Harry, Croque, Paula, Charlise, and—shockers!—Rodney. My interactions with them were positive.

Personally, I wouldn't call them ugly. Everyone has a different taste. One person's trash might be another person's treasure. If anything, there's popularity and that's usually the result of how appealing a villager's design is in the eye of many. Nothing wrong with either of those, although I have to agree. There are many cool and/or interesting villagers that don't get a lot of love because the "top tier" villagers take most of the spotlights. But to each their own, it's your game, you gotta have fun with it. 😉

Do you have a villager that’s considered ugly by the community that you really like?
If I had to name any that are often seen as ugly or barely get any attention, it'd be Hazel, Elise and Winnie! Elise was one of my New Leaf starters and all three I've mentioned are still in my town. Wouldn't trade "my girls" for anything.

A lot of them are sinfully ugly. Diva, Tabby, Hazel, Jambette to name a few.

But they can't all be cute. Need some ugly to balance it all out.

I read this a couple times and I still don’t know what a south bound cow looks like

Don't worry. It took me a few minutes to realize what this saying meant. A south bound cow is a cow that is facing south. So, if the cow's nose is pointing south, what is pointing north? 😜

Ugly is one of the easiest words to express there's something in the design of the heap of pixels that's my villager that I don't really like. Meaning, I use it freely, but only when talking about my own preferences with regards to villager design. We all appreciate different things, I like my villager's designs 'calm' and 'round'.

Sometimes, it takes some time before I can fully appreciate a design, Hopper's red eyes and yellow shirt threw me off massively in the beginning. But after toning him down a little with a black tuxedo, the red eyes and yellow no longer contrast as much. I am actually starting to appreciate him and his crankiness, and he's pretty round shaped ;)

That said, no amount of clothing could make Celia look better to me, her shape and the way she wore clothes just were ugly to me. Some of that probably also was the clash between the purple on her cheeks/toenails and the bright green wing accents that you can't cover up with clothes. So, I don't mind saying I think she's ugly, because writing down all the things I found wrong with her every time someone asks me which villager I ever disliked the most is a lot of typing, while it all boils down to that one word :)

I have Paolo right now. I remember when Nook moved him in I thought his eyebrows were a little bold and boxy. I'm used to them now and forgot all about them until I read this post. I actually think he's a very plain character. He's sweet, though, and I love that he loves to water my flowers. I'm happy to have met him, but ultimately, he's too plain for me to want to keep for the long haul.

Is Paolo considered ugly? To me he seems like one of the cuter elephant villagers (to be fair I don’t particularly like most of them) I do love his eyebrows especially.

Limberg gets a lot of hate. But if I saw him in a campsite I'd definitely adopt him, as i had him in New Leaf and he was one of my best friends.

I had Quillson for about a month, he was a lot of fun, I actually think he looks really cute so I don't get the hate for him either. I feel the same about Rodney! That little guy is adorable.

Also hoping to get Rasher again as I loved him in Wild World. 💜

Just like reality we can't all be perfect and cute, but that doesn't mean there is nothing to love.

Canberra was at the bottom of my list for sisterlies when I moved off my daughter's island and onto my own. But, that's who Nook assigned to me, of course. It only took a day or two for me to adore what I thought was ugly/creepy. She's quite fun. My daughter's Big Sis is Cherry. I think I like Canberra almost as much...maybe more. Her downside, though, she's hard to dress. (Got any ideas?) Cherry was easy. She still tells me how much she likes the black bomber jacket and aviators I gave her when I play my old character on my daughter's island.

I actually find myself more invested in the 'ugly' villagers than most 'pretty' (ie. popular) ones. I don't fully know what constitutes 'ugly' as it changes a lot in this fandom but I've seen a lot of people bully my OG girl Canberra and I won't stand for it, she's the sweetest and always gives me emotes 😠

I don’t know if I have an “ugly” villager that I really love, but I feel like especially with New Horizons this is a lot of people’s first interaction with animal crossing, so online they see tier lists and they see the popular animal crossing accounts that have villagers like stitches, marshal, Raymond, etc. and they think that those are the villagers to get. New players may just not understand that the only difference besides aesthetic is personality, so like stitches is lazy but so is Hugh, and so on. It’s completely fine to have a preference based off of how the villagers look, and they’re just in a game so you’re not hurting anyone’s feelings. I just worry that maybe new players think there’s something different about popular villagers and so they waste time and NMT and bells trying to find/buy certain villagers.

I agree! Quillson looked so sickly on the backdrop of the tent at the campsite (I wish visitors could wander around right outside the tent.), but once he moved into his own house, he was a different duck. And once he started singing, we were sunk. Lol. We enjoyed him until his asked to leave. Raymond move into his plot and while I do like Raymond, I think Quillson actually had more personality.

I had Quillson for about a month, he was a lot of fun, I actually think he looks really cute so I don't get the hate for him either.

I would just be happy with the game allowing villages to move out more often than once every fifteen days (minimum). That doesn't allow for many new faces in a year's time. I plan to buy a stack of cheap amiibos and rotate one villager's spot ever so often.

I really do wish we could have more spots for villagers. It’s funny how attached you get, even when you want to let some leave so you can ‘meet’ new ones

I have Katt, who I also had in new leaf and really love. I think she's really cute despite that others might think she's an ugly villager.
I like to think about the fact that a villager people may think is ugly might be someone else's favorite villager.

It’s still a mystery for me why so many people think the Lions are ugly. It’s always something about the flat face or the Mane. I just don’t see it and I looked a million times. Maybe I’m just weird. Haha

It really doesn’t matter. “Ugly” is subjective so it will be different for different people. For example, many find Hazel to be an ugly villager, but I find her kind of cute.

It’s so interesting sometime hearing the little details that bug people.

It’s interesting that the nose thing stood out to you with Marshal. So many of the villagers have no nose! It proves your point perfectly. Raymond is actually one of the few cats that does have a nose. (I’m sort of positive side of neutral on them both, personally)

But I also find that something that bugs me on a specific villager doesn’t necessarily bother me for others. I may just be more erratic in my tastes though.

Yeah - the lack of a nose doesn't bother me on Katt, for example - it looks right to me. Whereas Marshal looks like he has a big white space where...something should be!

I find it fascinating what different people find aesthetically pleasing, though. I have't really been able to put my finger on what makes a villager 'popular' on here - it seems like the 'cute' style is what most go for, but then Raymond really doesn't seem 'cute' to me - more nerdy looking, I guess?

Then there are other villagers who seem like they'd fit the mould, but don't seem to have as many fans, such as Midge.

I don’t think that a lot of details really matter to someone, if that someone actually likes the Villager. Like with Coco having no Mimic at all, Kidd having no visible Mouth or some Villagers like Walt or Biskit having no Pupils. It just adds a little bit of uniqueness to those Villagers.

And yes, people do prefer Chibi Type Villagers and cutesy Looks. If that Villager has no Nose or Mouth, it makes it a little bit cuter to some people. Just look at Bomberman. Nobody really hates him and all he has is Eyes. Or Kirby with no Nose.

I like most of the standard cute and popular villagers. That being said, I have had villagers considered unpopular and homely by other people and enjoyed them for a time. Ugly is subjective.

Nearly all my favorites are considered ugly by the community. Peewee, Boone, and Cesar, Tipper, Dora, all the anteaters, Cashmere, Walt, Deli, Shari, Broccolo, Huck, Bubbles, and many more.
