Opinions on “ugly villagers”?

I have a couple I really like, however my opinion of them normally ends up being tainted by others

Some I used to really like, like Hazel, were made fun of by my friends or people I knew personally so much or call ugly, undesirable, etc. to the point where I just didn’t like having them anymore :( i felt bad for liking them, if that makes any sense

That makes sense. I’m sorry that happened to you. :/

I would have to say my favorite parts of the villager discourse are the fact that every single villager has a devoted following, even if some are smaller than others.
Since Katt has come up a lot, she’s a great example. She’s...a hard ‘no’ for me. But so many people seem to love her. I can’t explain why well, but I think it’s really great. It gives me a warm feeling.

I dislike the vitriolic hate directed at some ‘ugly’villagers, or the idea that for people to defend their favorites they need to declare some sort of monopoly on what is cute vs not cute.

As time goes by my opinion on which villagers are ugly and which are cute has changed a lot, so it is hard for me at this point to think even my least favorite looking villager today might not be my favorite in the future.

But also, I am still in denial that anyone considers Tabby ugly, and I like it like that.

i think the main “ugly” villagers that i like are hazel and katt - hazel’s considered ugly for her unibrow and some people think katt just looks scary but i think they’re both adorable and deserve a bit more love.

i also really like iggly - he’s a dorky lookin’ fellow but he’s honestly so adorable and would love to have him on my island at some point 😌

Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

Some of the more popular villagers look 'ugly' to me - we got rid of Marshal as his sulky face with no nose was creeping out me and my three-year-old son, Raymond's design really doesn't appeal to me at all, and Zucker's deep-fried head with herbs stuck on his face makes him the most off-putting design I've come across so far!

There are other less 'popular' designs that I love, though - Astrid is awesome, and Rolf is a white tiger, so is always going to be cool.

It’s so interesting sometime hearing the little details that bug people.

It’s interesting that the nose thing stood out to you with Marshal. So many of the villagers have no nose! It proves your point perfectly. Raymond is actually one of the few cats that does have a nose. (I’m sort of positive side of neutral on them both, personally)

But I also find that something that bugs me on a specific villager doesn’t necessarily bother me for others. I may just be more erratic in my tastes though.

I don't think all villagers are necessarily created equal in terms of appearance. I gotta imagine the people at Nintendo who came up with them have tastes and ideas of their own - it's clear that for some villagers, like Tabby, Barold, Hazel, ugly was kinda the point. While ugly doesn't mandate hatred, I'm sure Nintendo probably know now which villagers are most popular among AC players and why. And I'm sure they can use that knowledge. In any case, all villagers are charming to somebody in some way, because with millions of players and 391 villagers to go around, it's inevitable.

Alll that said, I'm sure you can tell where I stand on certain "ugly" villagers lol

Some of the ugly ones aren’t that bad, I had 3 in my town and they were my starter villagers, they ended up growing on me.

I actually find myself more invested in the 'ugly' villagers than most 'pretty' (ie. popular) ones. I don't fully know what constitutes 'ugly' as it changes a lot in this fandom but I've seen a lot of people bully my OG girl Canberra and I won't stand for it, she's the sweetest and always gives me emotes 😠

I object! Tabby is peak cuteness! 😋

And you are most likely right that some villagers are meant to be more conventionally cute (and better for branded merchandise etc) while others are meant to look interesting or funny or cool, etc. when you make 400 characters you are forced to explore a range of looks. I do appreciate that none of the villagers are ‘rare’ in the game (or they are all rare, because there are so many)

As for the thread topic, I like a lot of unconventional villagers. I feel bad that people shame villagers for their looks, so at least they can have a safe haven on my island. I really wish we could have more than 10 plots.

I really do wish we could have more spots for villagers. It’s funny how attached you get, even when you want to let some leave so you can ‘meet’ new ones

I love Hazel! She was an accidental addition to my island via those villager homes I needed to build at the beginning of the game. I'd never seen her before, but fell in love with her personality as my island grew. I don't think I'll ever get rid of her-- she's a real sweetheart!

To address the topic - I like a lot of the "uglier" villagers. Typically the popular villagers are very simple and 'cutesy' looking. I prefer villagers with a little more oomph in their designs. It gives them more character.
