Opinions on this Popularity Tier List

Popularity is an aggregate measure of people's individual opinions. Whether you like a villager or not is your opinion, but whether a villager is popular or not is measurable to an extent. A villager being Tier 1 on a popularity list doesn't mean it's "good", it just means a lot of people like that villager and are willing to pay a lot for that villager. When someone says "There's no way X villager is Tier 5!", it just means their opinion of the villager is different from that of the broader community which is okay but it still doesn't change the fact that a villager is popular or unpopular. I'm not saying all villager popularity lists are accurate measures of popularity as there's no exact science to determining how popular a villager is and some of the villager popularity lists are probably biased by personal opinions, but there's nothing wrong with trying rank how popular villagers are. People do this with basically everything else that people have opinions on. ACNH is objectively one of the most popular games in Nintendo's history based on the number of copies it has sold. That doesn't automatically make it one of the greatest games ever because that's purely subjective, but it's undeniably popular.

The popularity list is kinda whatever. I see cute villager, I take cute villager.
Exceptions: I do not find Dom, Audie, Judy, or Sherb appealing to me but people still really want them and I'm cursed with good luck for other peoples dreamies so I grab them to giveaway. Especially since they don't have amiibos.

Lists based on votes can be rigged so I don't really trust them as much. I prefer ones that pay more attention to how often a villager is sought for, how much people are willing to pay for them, and how quickly. That way it's more showing statistically how much more popular a villager is. However, Agnes is in Tier 3 when people usually put her in Tier 5 (where she doesn't belong) so I'm just gonna shut up now lmao.

looking back I probably should have done this too. For a while it seemed like I was finding the villagers everyone liked (Audie, Sherb, stitches) but not the ones I wanted! It’s hard to give up that one free spot though, when I love so many villagers, and those three really don’t appeal to me. that’s a really nice thing you are doing!

I've been time traveling for photos so the lack of the free spot doesn't bother me that much except for Judy's spot. I've gotten Dom's photo before Judy's and Dom moved in like 3 villagers later. And I just had a minor panic at see a cub shadow on a mystery island and thought it was Judy. Totally forgetting Judy is on my island right now.
I do know the meaning of popularity, but it seems you misunderstood it.
It's as simple as I put it.
Popularity is an opinion, be it that of one person, or a hundred people.
It's (as I said) a personal choice.
The lists are just a measure of those who bothered to note that opinion.
Not an accurate measure of actual popularity.

the messiest list i've seen LOL so random. then again, there will never be an accurate one as there's really no way to indicate popularity and demand. there's really nothing. unless nintendo implements it from their data & count themselves which villagers are in most islands. even so, the initial random villagers would probably ruin that data because of casual players & people that dropped the game. voting are also sometimes rigged, or have select voters with bias, but i just feel like out of all i've seen, this is one of the most random looking one.

I am stoked, looks like most of the villagers i am considering getting are in tier 4, so can get them cheaper than most 
This is actually a pretty accurate tier list for other sites. Even Gayle, she has been very popular in animal crossing new horizons. Maybe not so much on tbt but on other trading sites. It has been really interesting to see how differently villagers are ranked here vs other sites.

I couldn't even tell you where my villagers land on those tier lists. I don't buy/sell villagers, so I never paid attention to them. If I click with one, I keep them, if not, they move out, hopefully to someone who likes them, but I'll void them if necessary.

In the case of this site, I think that the ability for people to vote for their favourites might skew the list in one direction or another, and isn't necessarily reflective of overall trends. I prefer tier lists which compile historical selling prices, quickness of sales, how many people want a particular villager, etc., as I think this gives a better overall picture of who is selling and who isn't.
Naturally, some villagers are generally going to be more popular than others. It's a trend that existed in New Leaf and it's a trend that exists now (see: Raymond). Whether or not we believe that that villager deserves that place in the ranking, I think is besides the point. Tier lists and popularity rankings look at how villagers are perceived across the Animal Crossing community, and individual opinions are bound to vary tremendously. These rankings aren't an indication of how good a villager is, but rather, how good the community generally thinks that villager is.
