I started playing AC in 2016, a few months before New Leaf's "Welcome Amiibo" update came out.
I became curious about the game while reading a long and thriving thread about NL on a general gaming forum where I used to post regularly. There, even before I touched the game, I was presented to how the game worked, it's social aspect and how the community played together. That aspect alone made me want to buy the game. Mind you, I was always very competitive when it comes to video games, as I grew up playing fighting games in the arcades (still play today, but at home). Even then, I always liked to help others, and this is why I connected so easily with Animal Crossing. It's ethos resonates with me.
I'm kind of a nerd when It comes to games' history, so I took my time to learn about the series before I got my copy of NL. Reading about it's story and how the game was conceived just made me feel sure that AC was for me. But I know that most people wouldn't bother doing something like that. Most of the new players also didn't have any contact with the previous statement of AC's fanbase before getting NH. But I don't feel like it's ONLY the newer players who are responsible for this shift. A lot of people who have been playing the series for a long time also changed the way the play.
The community isn't as receptive and inviting as it once was. A lot of people already said much of what I would say, so there's no need for me to repeat their words.
Mind you, there's still a good number of people out there who actually sees and plays AC as a community game - the way the game was conceived to be played, that is. We've seen, here on TBT, a few people trying to start a movement to basically save the original aspect of the game. We refused to join the "new" player's mentality and we've been trying to gather people to play in a more friendly way, as AC was played before NH.
@Mairen started a thread (already cited on the first page of this thread) to make it easier for those of us to help each other.
@solace was also very kind, and we spent some time playing together, helping each other and having fun with the game as it was meant to be played.
We're now in the minority, and it's up to us to reach other like-minded people out to play the game together, avoiding the whole mess that AC's community has become.
