Opinions: Community changing

My favorite in-game experience so far has been having someone over to do a trade, but since I was having a meteor shower I invited them to hang out. We wished on stars together for almost half an hour! It was just super fun and relaxing, and felt like spending time with a friend rather than a business partner.

Yes, though I think it helps that you're also quite generous. (I was so happy when you hosted your cataloging party. If you ever have another one, please let me know!)

I think when you put positivity out there, you often get the same in return, at least in Animal Crossing.

Thank you so much!! I do try to be generous:) I'm all about, treat people how you would like to be treated, right? That's how I try to go by :) I also know there are a lot of newcomers to the series so I would like for them, and everyone to have a good time and enjoy the game as much as I do too!

I will let you know whenever I host another! Right now I'm redecorating and building stuff on my island so it's a mess lol but once I kinda figure things out I will! I love hosting!

That will be an experiment and only time will tell. Today I woke up to a lot of pm's from usernames that were unfamiliar requesting the sakura items. Let's just say the favor I did wasn't exactly like ACNL play style.

I did the crafting and a lot of waiting on them! Said person told me they had materials but when I go to their island to craft they don't have the stones. So they fly in a friend (but do not warn me) I am literally waiting on their island, so they can use my recipe, so I can craft them sakura items for free. I didn't get much of a thank you. It is what is. I still have faith and I will still do things for free. Not giving up on this community. Hopefully, the hype will just fade away!

Oh no! That doesn't sound remotely fun, rewarding, or community-building. I'm really sorry you had such a poor experience when you tried to do something kind and generous for others. I really hope the hype dies down soon and people start focusing more on pro-social interactions and less on their own benefit.

If you want any items - free of charge, my treat, from my catalog or my crafting list, please let me know!

Sometimes I'm concerned that I'm coming off as stand-offish just because of how slow and awkward I am using the switch-lite keyboard to type. Though based on your story that wasn't the only inconsiderate-seeming thing you experienced over the course of that interaction.

I wasn't around for the new leaf community, but I would imagine that, as others have said, the playerbase for a game like this will mellow out in time. Right now you have a lot of people buying it because it's the hot new game. It seems like many of those people are rushing to experience every new thing this game has to offer. Once they've done so, I would imagine some get bored and start to drift off, leaving the people who enjoy ac for the atmosphere, which is nonthreatening, cute, and encourages players to experience each day as if living in a small friendly community. People who enjoy that sort of gameplay probably tend towards replicating that sort of vibe in player communities too, right?

I don't care about entry fees, get your bag.

But people are a lot more snippy and combative than before for sure. There were debates in the NL era, some mild scuffs over Marshall being overrated or not, stuff like that, and they usually ended pretty amicably, and if anything started, it'd diffuse fairly quickly. Every discussion thread now, especially about the EcOnOmY, usually ends in some petty fight that drags on and on for many pages (I'm not complaining, I like passively spectating drama lol) and it's wild.

And idk if it's just me, maybe it's cuz I'm on YT a lot, cuz I haven't seen any of it on here, but the disdain towards time travel has spiked profusely and idk why. Like there's literal hackers out there and the biggest AC sin is somehow not wanting to wait 48 hours for a hybrid flower to grow? And there's been way more discussions about what's considered cheating, nitpicking in-game mechanics and calling every little thing an unfair advantage. Like...this is the one game where most of that shouldn't even matter. Just pick your weeds, catch your fish, talk to your animals and chill out.

I'd say a lot of it depends on the platform you're using. I actually find this forum to have lower prices and a general notion that people should be offering their services for free/low prices, but it definitely has slower activity than the Reddit or some of the discords. The main AC:NH discord in particular, moves extremely quickly but also has a higher proportion of people who ask for high fees.

To be fair, they do have channels specifically dedicated to free trading/visiting, but many people within that discord don't necessarily openly advertise their stuff in channels. If you make connections with people, just like with your villagers, people will become more open to trading and may offer you and others opportunities for visits without offering to the wider community. (#slowgang!) That community that so many people are craving is absolutely there, even in the busiest of forums, but you need to make a bit of an effort to find it.

It could have something to do with peoples stress levels with whats going on in the world at the moment. I dont know, maybe its a sub conscience thing. IDK maybe im just dumb

It's definitely different but I'm also someone that doesn't linger long in communities. I don't carry strong feelings toward this trend of entry fees or asking high prices for an obscure item.

It annoys me to an extent but I realize, the slow route isn't bad.

I'm all about fair trade even if things are in chaos right now. So pray for me when I make a trade thread because I might get mobbed. :p

Honestly it's because the game itself is rather new. This happened when ACNL came out and once the games wore down the spirit of giveaways came out more.
People will enjoy their game in their own way! I've encountered so many people who have been generous :) I'm just taking it day by day and building a town I love and then I'll work on giving back to the community <3

Be the change you want to see!

Despite the massive greed that's happening, there's also a lot of great and kind people out there, too. I visited several people today for various things and tips/donations were welcome, but not required. I still like to tip regardless, but there are plenty of people out there who don't demand it or make 'entry fee's for visits to Celeste/shops/DIY recipes, etc.

And I think as long as this spreads and more of us open our doors to others this way, without fees and demands, that type of good is paid forward a lot. Some of what I was tipped today for my open visits, I tipped on to other people I visited later.

The game did start off on the wrong foot with the duping and people getting massive amounts of bells, etc. And the economy is pretty broken, especially in villager selling and some goods and other things as well. But I have been seeing an increasing amount of nice and fair people out there lately, compared to just a week ago. We just need to focus on that, I think.

Generosity and kindness tends to inspire the same in others. I think it will continue to spread as long as we do our part to help it. : )

I guess that comes with the competitive nature of the current ac economy. People who don't want to time travel feel like people who do time travel and take part in the same trading community have an unfair advantage and are preventing them from being able to fully participate while playing the game the way they choose to, which they resent. Hopefully everyone calms down before long. It's kind of funny that a game about being adorable next to animals who are also being adorable has such a cutthroat trade scene.

new leaf was my first animal crossing game, and when it came out I spent soooo many hours trading online for items, dreamies, bells, etc.

honestly, the community then and now still feels kinda the same to me? 😂 I remember paying for good turnip prices, for visiting ppls shops, for cataloging items, for the crazy prices to get a popular villager.

I guess now that the games audience is a lot bigger, it just seems more apparent. Idk

tbh no ac series in general is laid back so it makes sense the community is as well for the most part

I mean, that's not really true. The community around the time of NL was much more laid-back than this.

I think a big part of it is that people are forced to compete against others via the stalk market if they want to make more profits. In NL, this wasn't an issue, because islands spawned infinite numbers of bugs. The stalk market drives more competition.

Absolutely true! The game was released in the Summer and the Island bugs like the Golden Stag was worth like 10G if I remember. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the economy. In fact, I spent hours with friends on the island catching bugs, chilling to that wonderful island song :)

off topic... but yes i even miss the island song (and kapp'ns) ugh being nostalgic. i guess we really have to settle with stalk market now? the tarantula trick gets old QUICK

I believe it's because we're still in the early stages and everyone is fighting to get the right stuff to finish their island the fastest. This is why TTing cheaters are so prevalent rn

Ok so you'd rather go to an island to catch bugs instead of going to an island to catch bugs?

Oh it's def changing. A lot of egos are growing. Everyone's all stressed on who has the better town and how they can make theirs better. I'm not gonna lie, known the amount of hours has affected me too. I've been lowkey trying to stay with more hours than my friends, like I have something to prove? Idk psychology is weird like that.

I mean, beetle farming is profitable compared to selling turnips. Tarantula farming is barely profitable, because the cost of NMT's + the RNG factor wrecks any chance at a large profit.

social media also plays a factor. it's bigger than it ever was! the possibility to see other island, and trade with other people is bigger than it was in new leaf where there are certain (limited) websites to trade and join the ac community. there's also pressure that comes with that to make your island evolve as to what others have already accomplished, but what i don't understand is that why would people be in a hurry anyways to complete the island when they are doing slow rollouts and haven't even released all features.

obviously, the game is new, but it's worth noting that nook miles tickets was NEVER a thing. let alone, be a new form of currency that is driving the market MAD. even for high turnip prices, there are crazy entry fees???? so saying that the game is new, i'm not sure i feel like it wasn't like this even when new leaf was new with or without the amiibo update.
