WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THERE WILL BE AN ANALOG STICK ON THE NEW DS...
...BUT IN A INCONVENIENT SPOT LOL.

Goddamnit, take lessons from the PSP design.

People are actually saying the D-Pad is in a more inconvenient spot then the slide pad.

It's above the D-Pad.

The problem with combining them is the D-Pad and the Slide Pad are two completely different things. Imagine Microsoft or Sony combining the Analog Stick and the D-Pad on their controllers.

Developers are using the D-Pad as separate buttons while the Slide Pad is being used for something else. It wouldn't be the same if Nintendo combined them.

They just need to do away with the goddamn d-pad. Nintendo is too hell bent in adding buttons to their portables every generation.

The D-pad is good for precision controls, so I don't know why you are complaining, you will probably have the option to use D-Pad or Analog.

If it's truly going to be 3D then I would rather have the joystick because it was incredibly frustrating play SM64DS with that D-pad. So they'd just need a joystick mainly, but side scrolling games will never die so they will just never get rid of the d-pad.

While that may be, what gaming console or portable doesn't have a D-Pad? Even the Playstation Move has a D-pad.

Because side scrollers never die.

The analog stick placement looks fine to me. I don't really see a problem. D-Pads will never, ever die.

I'm not to fussed. I really don't like analog sticks that much. I only ever use them on my PSP put even then I just randomly move it around massaging my finger :)

Um...why is its placement bad? It's in the same spot that the D-pad was in on the Nintendo DS. But, because the 3DS is backwards compatible, they still needed to keep the D-pad, so they moved it below the slide pad. It's just like the GameCube controller. I don't see how it's a "bad" placement in any way... Where else is there to put it?! Also, the design isn't final, so they may end up moving it before it's released. I hope they don't, though, because it's perfect right where it is.

1. It's bad because people normally hold the DS from the bottom and not the middle, where the analog stick is.
2. Put it below the D-pad.
3. Except the Gamecube controller had the analog stick above the d-pad.
4. I hope they move it.
5. FFFFFFUUUUUUU-
