Hello, I've been a huge fan of ACNL since I got it last year, kinda late to the game but I love it anyway! I decided with the new update I should get an amiibo, so today I got Blathers. I just love him!!! However, I did not realize I needed a reader with my ds to be compatible. Yeah yeah I know! Well I just wanted to see if it is worth getting a reader also. I guess I don't quite "get" it" but I am willing to learn! What do you guys have to say about it? The more info I have, the more I can convince my hubby to let me spend the money haha.
If its an old 3DS then you need an NFC reader, without it you can't do anything amiibo related. Its relatively cheap $10-$20 and it takes 2 AA batteries. You just turn it on and put the amiibo on top of it, and when prompted in the game you just point the 3DS to the reader~

If you want Blathers in your camp ground then it's definitely worth spending the money on it I think.
I collect the Amiibo cards and I'm really happy I have the reader so I can actually use them!
I think it's worth it, definitely -- you can use amiibo in a lot of games, and it's a lot cheaper than buying a New3DS! More and more games have amiibo scanning built in so you're going to need one eventually, I think? So why not now! The only problem is they seem to be selling out some places, don't overpay for one. I think $20 is the Target price, although I never see them at mine. Gamestop probably always has them in stock.
It really depends on how much you think you may use it. Personally my amiibo figures have been more for decoration. Though I will be using them in the game soon.
