mine didn't automatically update, you have to have ACNH selected, press + and update manually.

It's massive. Can't see the size but I'm on very high speed internet (600+ Mbps download speed), takes 20 minutes to download and update the software. On Reddit someone with slow speeds said their projected time was 15 hours kek

To update manually just go to the home screen, hover over the Animal Crossing icon then press +, select Software Update then press Via the Internet to download
