Most common island theme?

Cottagecore with "THE" path. I hate it.
"THE" path? what's that??

It probably is cottagecore, but I love that style so I didn't even really notice. Honestly, in the beginning there were so many "water" towns, with lots of rivers and canals, and very detailed but unnatural feeling terraforming, that I'm glad cottagecore is the biggest trend right now. I really didn't like that earlier trend, it just looked too clean and forced somehow. But all of this is very personal, and I'm glad that there are so many people making very different types of islands, even though some are more popular. I also think as others have said in this tread before that a lot of it has to do with the kinds of items available as well.
I thought I was the only one who thought very detailed terraforming felt weird. ;; I honestly try to avoid too much terraforming if I do it I try to keep things natural.

Anything Japanese - either zen, imperial or modern city/street. Aesthetic themes are very 'in' too, Fairycore, Witchcore and Cottagecore come into mind. Horror or creepy themed islands are also making a small comeback as I've noticed.
No hate towards any of those themes btw, I love them all equally and am just making a common observation.

agreeing with most of the people who previously posted. most common themes would be cottagecore, fairycore and witchcore.

"I was inspired by how they decorated this area/room and would copy this thing in my area" kind of theme without acknowledging the creator or giving them credit xD. Also, those islands that looks like their areas are always "boxed" (like inside a perfect square-shaped area) surrounded with fence or something and then an incline. It looks like I'm viewing a room inside their house or I'm in a museum expo, not exploring an island. Not that it's something bad or ugly. Just common, I guess.

prediction: once the dream suite comes back, you will see that the most common "theme" is newbie islands. houses all over the place, trees all over the place, 2-3 bridges/inclines, no pathways, very few hybrid flowers, if any.

at least that's how it was in new leaf whenever you let Luna pick the dream for you

"THE" path? what's that??
It's probably this one: Link

I agree, anything Japanese and cottagecore or fairycore with variations seems to be the most common. Can't blame anyone, there's only so much you can do with the current amount of furniture and custom patterns. Don't mean to start an off topic rant, but I'd trade half of the clothing catalog for some New Leaf or Pocket Camp furniture. In the meantime, I just try to add little bits and pieces to my island whenever I feel like it, without following any specific theme besides going for a natural look and feel, for the most part.
