So for any Mac OS X Snow Leopard users, the App Store become available today. Bringing the best of the iPod/iPhone App Store to the Mac, further progressing Apple's plan of destroying CDs.

Anyone used it yet, if so what apps have you got? I got the Twitter and SketchBook Express apps.

For Windows users, thoughts on this? I'd be interested to see if you guys think it's a cool idea.

I'm downloading the update now. I have to wait until my computer finishes converting some things to restart it, though.

i read on kotaku there's something about having to buy the app once for the mac/computer, and once for the ipad. which seems really ass-backwards.

not going to effect me (hopefully) as if i cared about widgets, i could download/learn to make some rainmeter stuff. games, i have plenty to keep me occupied.

They're not widgets, they're full on applications. Instead of buying the CD (say for iWork) you can just one-click download and install it straight from the store.

The iPad / Mac thing is reasonable I think, considering the apps are actually different. I can see for some things like games where it's just a port over to the Mac platform, but otherwise, it's fair.

then, it'd be just as easy to download a shareware variant of MS office (openoffice) or to find a program that'll do what i need.

i don't understand why, other than money, stores need to exist on computers/online.

again, it hopefully won't effect me in any way, so i have no problem with it, i guess.

Because, unless you illegally download software, you can't get it. Yes software has shareware variants but not all of them live up to the power of paid versions.

Mac's are stupid. in my opinion anyway.
I find them to be extremely overpriced hardware-wise.
Because that is completely relevant to the topic.
Indeed, people got over the whole Mac vs PC debate a long time ago, stop trying to turn every Mac-related topic into one.

I like Mac's. I do, but they're overpriced. My friend has one and I love it, so I think this App store is a good idea. I'll check it out on her's sometime.

They're overpriced compared to other computers.

That's like saying "That portia is overpriced. I think my $11,000 1978 hatchback with engine problems is much better."

The thing that bugs me about the app store is that some apps are much more money than they are on the iTouch/iPad.

Exactly, and yet they're nothing special and become obsolete after a few years and hard to upgrade.

Just like a windows. Eventually, you'll run out of space on both and/or you won't have enough processing speed to run newer things/update. Computers age, too.

@ jason, the windows v mac flaming only stopped because windows stopped caring about it, due to leaving/inactivity.

@ bacon boy, i would totally agree with you, but you have it backwards. mac being the hatchback with engine problems that cost a fortune and then some to repair at the one shop in town that accepts them.

a windows machine is easily upgradeable. you misunderstood lawliet, he was saying apple became obsolete (at least, judging from his previous post).

I'm considering upgrading my computer by buying a processor (so i can play GTA IV finally Q.Q). there's one i saw in an advertisement that was six cores @ 3.0ghz AMD, for ~$200. I already have a great graphics card (not too weak to fall behind the times, though it's two years old), HUGE hard drive (and if i ever fell short of space, a 2TB internal HDD is only $100 away), and a power supply that leaves me plenty of room for expansion if i needed more power. if it doesn't cut it, i can easily get another for ~$100 max.

so, accounting for all parts (motherboard included) it would probably cost me $500 for a new computer. 3GB of DDR2 ram, a kickass (nvidia geforce 9800) graphics card, a new power supply, and a whopping 3 TB + bonus 200 GB of hard drive space, six cores, and a dvd drive/writer (just to throw that around, since it's in there)

plus, i can take my old parts (processor, power supplies) and put them into an OLD computer, or leave my current setup alone, buy a new case for ~$50 and just start from scratch. add in about $100 max for a fair amount of DDR2 ram (i'd say 4 gigs) or spring for some DDR3 (since it's more or less standard now) and i'd still be sitting pretty at $700 or so.
for the OS, i have an option to use linux, use my backup CDs, or spring to buy windows 7 for ~$200 or so (i don't remember, rounding up)

now tell me. how much can you get in a mac for that amount? ($900)

edit: and yes, herp de derp, computers age. the difference being that windows computers/PCs not made by apple are easily user-upgraded, instead of a full one piece machine that must be taken to the shop.

oh well. not like yet another mac vs windows is going to make anyone think otherwise, right?
