Not really. Macs are mainly used for media editing as Windows are used for Documents and Spreadsheets as well as gaming.

Don't know why you're being ignorant.

yeah, that exclusive deal with final cut pro and discounts on adobe software must mean macs are better for them, right?

Not what I'm talking about. People just tend to prefer Macs for movie editing/sound editing.

I love the layout of macs but I get confused when I use them... ;_;

And yes the apps sound awesome to me.. >:D

it's not so much a preference for movie editing as it is a bit of a necessity

not for any apparent reason other than "*censored.3.0* you", which is unfortunate

I don't disagree with any of your points regarding the argument against Macs, but is it going to stop me or anyone else buying and using one? No.

The simple fact is that I like the Mac OS, it's a pleasure to use. It's not the root of the operating system, it's the simple things. The fact that I can click on an image, document or video, press my spacebar and have it instantly open for me to view instead of having to wait for an application to launch, or that I can have multiple desktops with Spaces for productivity. There are many other minor details that just make it worth the money in my eyes.

as run.exe's already pointed out, you don't have a choice when you need to use final cut pro.

david's many threads and posts have shown/said that it's necessary to have a mac for that program alone, which is the only reason he bought it. after using it for a while, he grew to like it, but i'm fairly sure he could've gotten a likable laptop or something and saved some dosh.

i'm not being ignorant, i'm being an educated buyer. it's just common sense to not shell out money because it's a complete product, when you can buy better parts for less money and DIY, unless you can't DIY, which would be the only reason i purchase a mac.

@ jason, already taken into account this whole convo isn't going to change anyone in any way. i can respect you for liking the OS, though i don't agree with paying/settling that much for it (personally)

i know that ubuntu has a multi-desktop setup, but i couldn't tell you if it has the spacebar handy-dandy pic viewer. i don't look at pics i've saved enough to do anything more than picasa, which works just fine for me. again, preferences.

on the topic of OS-exclusive software, i think it'd be very interesting if (in some magical place) all software ran on both systems. i'd just like to see how many people would still prefer windows, and how many people still preferred macs.

though, thinking about it, the software is what really makes the system.. so i guess that's kinda a moot point. eh.

Seems like Mac is controlling more and more aspects of its PC.
The Mac App Store isn't restricting the OS in any way. Yes, the iPhone is very restricted with its App Store, but that's an entirely different thing on an entirely different device. The Mac App Store is just an alternate way to download applications on your Mac, in addition to the traditional way of finding applications online through various websites and buying retail discs. But with the Mac App Store, you can get many applications at a discount price, and with just one click. It's also a lot easier to browse through, find, and download applications. So, yes, Apple definitely is bringing a lot of features from their iPhone's iOS over to Mac OS X, and that will be even more prominent with Mac OS 10.7 Lion, but restriction is not an aspect that they are bringing over.

Indeed, people got over the whole Mac vs PC debate a long time ago, stop trying to turn every Mac-related topic into one.
I like Mac's. I do, but they're overpriced. My friend has one and I love it, so I think this App store is a good idea. I'll check it out on her's sometime.
They're overpriced compared to other computers.

That's like saying "That portia is overpriced. I think my $11,000 1978 hatchback with engine problems is much better."

The thing that bugs me about the app store is that some apps are much more money than they are on the iTouch/iPad.
Two things:

First of all, it's not "portia" it's Porsche.

Secondly, your average new car cost far less than $11,000 in 1978.

Wait, three things:

As a MacBook owner, I can say that the assessment that they are overpriced on the hardware side is quite accurate. I will still say that Mac OSX is a far superior OS to Windows, but in retrospect I could've saved a lot of money by opting for a cheaper (and probably marginally more powerful) non-Apple laptop. So I agree with L Lawliet, for once.

I like my macbook. I actually found that after using it for a while it's difficult to go back to windows. It just doesn't feel right. Yes, they're very overpriced, and yes you can get the same specs on an i7 on a barebone computer for a lot cheaper, but either way, I haven't had any problems. A laptops a laptop.

Looks like I should point out true facts more often, thank you Trevor and Psycho.

There's one thing this whole debate is leaving out though, the build quality of mac laptops. Compared to the plastic rubbish that most windows laptops are, mac laptops are made out of 1 piece of metal, moulded into shape to provide stability. Not only that but you have the amazing screen, chiclet keyboard and glass trackpad. Every detail in the build quality of a mac just feels so much more stable than what you would get with a windows laptop.

It's still not worth such a ridiculous price.

^^^

though you're right in that i had not considered the build quality. i was leaning more towards the actual mac desktop computers. iMacs or what have you. the screen may be hella nice, but that's about all it offers.

as for laptops, a macbook of some sort is probably the best, i'll give you that much. you may be able to get a more affordable or more powerful laptop, but in the end mac can probably do laptops best. (i haven't tried one personally)

still, there is no comparison in desktops/PC's, especially if you're looking at bang-for-buck.
but if we're going to be doing that, laptops are generally out of the question to begin with. mirite?

In your eyes.

For me, it is definitely worth the price. Price is just whatever somebody is willing to pay, and I am willing to pay that much extra for a Mac due to the build quality and amazing operating system.

it's not difficult

furthermore, my friend dropped his macbook pro about six inches from his bed onto his carpeted floor.

it broke and had to be sent in for repairs.

they had to replace the hard drive.

He must've been very unlucky then, because I've dropped my MacBook Pro many times (not to mention bumped it into many things), and I've never had any problems with mine.

All mac's are made in the SAME factories HP's and Toshibas and every other laptops are made, in fact some HP's do have the same Aluminum/glass setup.

Anyway back to on topic, is there anything in the app store worth getting? How about something that will let me actually close my lid without shutting down?
