I've been told some expire but I have yet to encounter any expired codes.
In November, I registered New Super Mario Bros DS and I still got the coins for it.
I think certain codes may have an expiration date.
However, If you got Wii U and 3DS games on deck, you can rest easy because those games are the most recent.

Systems rack you up lots of coins.
All of those should be eligible for registration aside from the Pikachu edition as I believe it just falls under the category of just plain 3DS XL.
Also, don't you have a Wii U?
You can register that as well.

Even though it's new, you should be able to score some coins still.
Wii U, 3DS, and 3DS XL are all worth 160 coins so that puts you about more than halfway to getting all the super cool stuff.
