edit: I’m not angry at all in this thread! I promise! I’m just expressing my views on mr. nook’s localization c:

it drives me a little batty that horizons went full on with the idea that tom nook is a raccoon and not a tanuki. He's CLEARLY a tanuki! He looks absolutely nothing like a raccoon! They even changed the name of one of the tanuki items in the game to "raccoon statue" omg (just my opinion!)

I knowwww it's a dumb detail but it's important to me okay

edit: I'm just chillin guys, having a conversation about how tom nook isn't a raccoon isn't me being petty it's just me having a convo, please take negative vibes somewhere else 🤟

Mm...yeah. Beats me why they would change that to make it more local but didn't bother translating some of the furniture items like books and the signs on the street pole lol.

exactly, nobody had a problem in new leaf with tanukis, idk what changed haha

Didn't they do this before too, at least in NL? I can't recall off the top of my head if they did in GC/WW but in NL I recall there already being a raccoon figurine item that was clearly a tanuki, along with the raccoon wall clock DLC item. Here they are on MoriDB:

It IS a little strange to me that they do it at all though, but imo it's even weirder with Kapp'n... his name is blatantly referencing a kappa, they have the kappa cap & costume (which is still in NH even though Kapp'n and his family aren't, lol), and yet they call him a turtle.

If this were 10 years ago, I would have guessed they localized the translation due to the west not being as knowledgeable about japanese culture. But this is 2020 and most of us have been immersed in the culture one way or another to the point we're a lot more familiar with their terminology and lore. So I'm not entirely sure in this case.

I have an isue with it too. I hate Americanization with a passion.
it just doesn't make sense!!

oh that's interesting, i swear i remember it being called a tanuki figurine in NL? maybe i'm remembering wrong!

When you google "Tanuki" the first thing that shows up is Raccoon Dog so people most likely just get confused

The Tanuki IS called Raccoon Dog, so it's not really that strange. Most people don't even know the difference between a tanuki and a raccoon. It makes sense from a localisation standpoint, but I do agree it's a bit of a bummer.

To be honest I do think it's a bit weird that they're still even bothering to keep some of these localizations as if people will lose their minds if they see Nook being referred to as a tanuki instead of a raccoon.

On the other hand though, I guess if they didn't keep it consistent it would be possibly weird or alienating for a lot of veteran players who are used to said localization choices, especially since ones like Gracie being a woman and Nook's are in all editions except for the Japanese one.

They used to not do so much localization.

In the original instruction booklet for Super Mario Bros. 2 it clearly stated that Birdo was a boy that thinks he's a girl.

I think the line on Birdo now is just that it's a girl.

I honestly had no idea what timmy/tommy/tom nook were this whole time. I've been calling them badgers for years, though

This thread is so petty I can't even :lemon: It's because Tanuki are "raccoon dogs" which get their name because they resemble raccoons. It makes perfect sense why items resembling raccoons would be titled as such.

Just another thing to add to the list of small complaints people have that are being blown out of proportions

BRO i even said it's a small thing but it's just my thing LOL if you got a problem take it elsewhere! It's all chill vibes from me.
