Is there a way to move out of an island into a new one on a different Nintendo Switch ?

Hi !

My cousin will set up shop on my island shortly. But, she is also entertaining the notion of buying herself a Nintendo Switch with Animal Crossing down the line.
Will she be able to move her character out of my island and onto hers if she buys a Nintendo Switch ?

no she won't be able to. she'd have to make a completely new save on her own switch. if you transferred your island data over to her switch, you wouldn't have your save on your switch, so she would have your island while you would have nothing.

if she's going to get a switch for acnh, it would probably be better for her to just go ahead and get it instead of making some progress on your island and then get it later down the line. unless she wants to make a character just to try out the game. but there's no way to transfer her progress over from your save to her own save without taking your whole save, if that makes sense.

Hmmm. If Nintendo announces a 4K ''Pro'' Switch next year, I might sell her my current V1 Switch. So if that happens, can I move my island to that new Nintendo Switch ?

If (and I do mean IF) Nintendo chooses to sell a new, more powerful version of the Switch (Switch Pro), than they might patch that functionality in since a lot of Switch owners will want fancier graphics, and will buy the Pro version.

Currently there is no way to transfer AC data to another switch. Although I am fuzzy on the details, you can still transfer data if your system is lost/damaged. (Possibly from the back-up feature they just added a few months back) So you could maybe lie and say you lost/it is damaged. I don't know if that would work or not though.

For context, I recently transferred island save data onto a new Switch console, so the information in the video below is accurate as of Thursday, October 15, 2020.

To supplement the video's instructions, based on my own experience of contacting Nintendo Support via online chat, here is some other information to have on-hand and ready to provide to Nintendo Support when you contact them to transfer island save data to a new console:
  1. The serial numbers of both old and new Switch consoles
  2. The Nintendo account nickname of the primary resident representative
  3. The name of the island you wish to transfer
In that video, some folks commented that they had to lie and claim that their old Switch console got damaged. However, I was fortunate and was able to straight up tell Nintendo Support that I got a new console and wanted to transfer my island save data to the new one.

Ah you were lucky, I tried to get the same thing done and they just flat out told me they wouldn’t let me unless my old system was actually broken. So I got a bit annoyed and asked them if I had to purposely break a perfectly good console to upgrade? And now they’re ignoring me
oops
That was perhaps not very tactful

That is really unfortunate; I'm sorry they weren't able to go through the island transfer for you. :( I guess the only thing you can do is try again and hope that you get someone on the Support team who lets you do it. I actually reached out to Nintendo Support via online chat twice (the first time to ask about transferring island data to a new console before actually buying the new console), and both times, they were willing and able to help me do it. This makes me think it's an internal miscommunication/training issue, but who knows.

Good luck, and I hope that the next Support member you run into helps you out! ❤
