Is it true villagers can't move on to paths anymore

It seems to be true. I moved an amiibo villager in today and she moved into the spot I had allocated for her by placing paths everywhere I didn't want her to move. It appears to work but I'm wondering what happens if you cover all the possible spots with paths and a villager moves in. I'm thinking that would be the only instance in which they take priority over paths.

Interesting, Ill try to test that once I get my last villager to move in,
I have flowers/paths everywhere else except for where I want them to move in

I set up my town with paths and yellow benches for where I don't want my villagers to move. It takes many days for the 9th villager to move into my town. I can only imagine it is because they are figuring out where they can set their house since there aren't many available spaces. I think trees also work the same way as paths and yellow benches since I haven't had a villager move on top of them.

They won't move on top of patterns but will still destroy trees, bushes, etc.

If your town is covered in paths and you invite a villager in, they won't move in until there is space. I've tested it.

Yep, I have tested this many times, if you leave some spaces open for houses, (3 x 3) they will move there. Also, if you don't leave ANY room for them to move in, then they WILL move in on patterns so be careful! I am so glad this happened!

Yeah this is true and will work! :D
Town completely covered in paths would simply make them plot randomly... :/.

Yep. A town with no available space (because of being completely covered in patterns) would make the villagers plot their houses in random spots.

I think trees also work the same way as paths and yellow benches since I haven't had a villager move on top of them.

I just had Julian move on top of my pear trees (thankfully he only took about half of them so I'm not too mad) so they can still move on top of trees and flowers and things. I don't know if it was kind of a "last resort" sort of thing or not but I don't have too much in the way of pathing, I'm more concerned about my trees and flowers being mowed over.

I had a villager place their house 2 spaces diagonally away from a pattern.
But no one has even moved on my patterns c:

I just wish there was an invisible pattern or something since I have dirt paths and can't find a pattern that would fit in with my towns theme if it was placed every other space :c

It works. On a brand new town, I wanted to test this so I placed patterns everywhere, not like completely every space, I just made sure there was no 3x3 places what so ever ...

Except for where I wanted the villager to place the house. One after the other, until I got 9, they all plotted where I wanted them. I even "painted" the plot space with a colorful pattern just to make sure it was exactly where I wanted it. Then I'd take up the colorful pattern and wait. (I never time travel).

Another little nifty trick I learned is upon turning on the game, you see your town, but its just a, how to say, its not what actually is happening, it's what could be happening. I'd wait, and I'd see the villager plot ropes at the site, so then I know it probably worked. In this way I never made an alt character to check the location. I just went with it and trusted it worked and it always did.

You just have make sure you don't make any mistakes leaving another 3x3 location down. Unless you'd like them there. I guess you could in fact plan out every plot ahead of time, and then let the village just randomly go into one of these areas.

But as @smolfriskeh mentioned, dirt paths. I want to do these, and I will have to find a work around, I also wish there were some type of invisible cell "paint" on patterns, this would be quite useful for many things. We need transparency in design.

This seems useful short term, but its not beautiful long term unless the patterns are really something to behold. x)
