Is it me or do villagers lose their value when EVERYONE wants em?

This makes me wonder whether some of the villagers were just designed to be ugly. I think if the point of the game was that they were all supposed to be super cute and adorable it might take away from the life of Animal Crossing a little. Idk, there is something to be said about people wanting to play the game the way they think it should be, and for some people that means no less-than-gorgeous villagers, but there's also the fact that we're all voluntarily immersing ourselves into a world full of Japanese game designers' furry OCs.

I'm curious to know what went behind creating all these characters, what the thought for making Tabby or Barold look how they do was, etc. People complain so much about how the new games' villagers are less rude to you, I figure similar would happen if they decided to take out or change all the commonly-considered-to-be-ugly ones.

Actually, I think that boils down to personal taste. Some people aren't going to go for the cutesie pastel villagers. And villagers like Tabby have their fans. Certainly not as vocal as fans of the more popular villagers, but some people like villagers who make them laugh.

All of my favorites have always been unpopular so I can't really relate. The only somewhat "popular" villager I have is Kyle. Most of my villagers are gorillas and hippos. Two extremely underrated species imo. Bubbles and Rocco are two of my top villagers of all time. Rocco has been my bff since Wild World. It would be nice to see more variety when you visit people though. For example, in acnl when I wanted to see a villager in game I was considering I had to hunt someone down who had them.

It's all subjective though. I love the rhinos, hippos, gorillas, alligators, and lions. I think quite a few users would prefer the "ugly" ones over the really cute ones. I think the design of all the animals is good. You get a few cute ones, a few weird ones, and a few butt ugly ones. It balances out.

If it was fully subjective, you'd have an even villager spread across all towns of all sorts of random villagers without any clusters of popularity. But that isn't the case, especially online. The popular villagers are objectively more attractive than their less popular counterparts (not based on my personal feelings, but based on the % of people who want or have that villager in their town, currently. And the price of amiibo cards for certain villagers over others, makes them objectively more valuable.)

While how we as individuals feel X or Y in regards to a villager and may see special value in some of them, it has no bearing on how the population views them as a whole.

we don't even have dream addresses in this game (yet?) so i don't really see the issue here because you don't have to see them on other people's islands. just don't invite them to yours. every villager in the game has a fan base, some are just louder than others - that doesn't mean that they don't exist.

if i stopped liking everything that was popular, i'd be missing out on a lot of cool stuff.
if i started listening to people who said they didn't like the stuff that i did, i'd be missing out on a lot of cool stuff.

This entire post perfectly describes how I feel about this whole Raymond (and other popular villager) situation. I wanted to write something similar to this but I didn't know how to word it properly. Thank you so much for writing this, lots of people really need to hear it lol

It makes me sad since a lot of people are specifically getting Raymond as a status symbol and to show him off, not because they actually want him. I've genuinely liked him from the minute he was revealed and have bonded with him in my game so it just makes me feel bad, idk ;w;

I wish people can just like who they like and move on and not make a thousand posts saying the same thing each time about how they don't like Raymond which is apparently cool now I guess? It.. kinda makes me feel guilty for even having him, cause I feel like whenever they bring up "annoying" Raymond fans that I'm grouped in with them :/ Dunno how to explain it, I'm tired.

I love Raymond but every time someone makes a post about his popularity it's just bringing up more of the same drama that they're complaining about. It's really bumming me out now.

i'm in the same weird spot as you in regards to raymond. i knew from the moment he was revealed that i wanted him as a neighbor since he looks like a cat i loved as a kid, but now i feel almost guilty for liking him too. i've even found myself thinking that i should get rid of him so people don't judge me when they come to my island. :/

awh don't let other people's opinions on that type of stuff affect you (i know you can't help it but maybe hearing it will help solidify a different mindset). i wanted raymond as soon as i saw him because he reminds me 1000% of one of my best friends. if someone's gonna judge you for a villager that you have on your island, they can leave.

I think it's a shame that despite the fact that there's over 400 villagers, you always seem to see the same 20 in everyone's towns. I can appreciate the explanation that "well, they are popular for a reason" but in most cases, people are going to seek the "popular" villagers simply because everyone else wants them because they want that attention of "oh my gosh you have ___ villager. I LOVE them!!♥" and not because they actually like that villager.

I'm (joking) about to open my town to the public with the headline of "come see rare and exotic villagers!" because I have quite a few villagers that no one else ever seems to have or want in their towns. My villagers want some love and attention too.
im totally just curious as to who you have in your town o:

See and this is why it's so messed up. I've heard a lot of people saying the drama is ruining Raymond for them or straight up making them hate him and it's just.. so sad. He's a little pixel cat cutie who's done nothing wrong. People should be able to like and have the villagers that they genuinely want and not feel bad about it. Nobody should ever feel bad about something like that.

I have a gray cat that I love dearly too and Raymond makes me think of him. Please don't give him up because of the drama! Whenever I see his adorable face in game I forget about all of the bs 🥰
I just hope once Raymond gets an amiibo most of the drama will stop cause almost everybody is sick of it.

There’s an appeal to obtaining what is currently the most popular thing, to be sure, but I feel like that sort of enhances your own personal likings even more. For example, I originally got Marshal on my New Leaf island because of how popular he was and, while I’ve grown to legitimately like him, Angus is still my favourite because he was one of my very first villagers in the original Wild World. The fact that everyone loves Raymond and wants him on their island (myself included, to be honest) makes my unique love of Angus feel all the more special.

it does help to hear, actually, so thank you! i never engaged with other AC fans online for any of the previous titles, so this whole hubbub around villager popularity is all new to me and it's getting to me more than i'd like...

i just feel fuzzy and nostalgic too when i see him in-game, so i think i'll just have to power through the feeling of being judged and stop letting it get to me. thank you for the encouragement! and yeah, i also feel like things might chill out once he gets an amiibo. here's to hoping it's soon...

i ended up with bob as my 10th villager... knew he was popular and decided to see what he was like. he was cool and all, but when i got the chance to get someone i read about(octavian), bye bye bob... i wanted the unique alien dude more than the crossdresser.

Exactly, people need to hear it. I'll leave a disclaimer before proceeding though, you are free to dislike any villagers or even outright hate them (i.e Bunnie, since I'm petty and she made Mitzi cry, this is treason, I'm banishing them from my town/island.) but, going out of your way to put down others or make them feel bad about liking them is uncalled for and rude.

My main issue with this is people are downplaying other's efforts on getting their dreamies. People have TTed, people have resorted to RMT, people resorted to hardcore MMO-like grinding to get their dreamies. Like me, I endured (including the seller) 16 hours of delivering the bells to Raymond's seller (not counting the weeks I persevered taking to JP turnip sellers). If someone said that I'm just bandwagoning don't know how much I've worked for him. This is same to everyone who tried their best trading upwards to getting the villagers they wanted. I won't be swayed by a bunch of people who just makes me feel bad for liking Raymond. The only thing that makes me feel mad and the need to say it is just the downplaying of efforts and just calling their hard-earned villagers "worthless" just because they gained traction.

No sane person will put this much effort just for some cat clout. People who extort others when they so happen to stumble across Raymond are not the same since they don't like him for him and just for money.

And I'll be frank:
Why is there a need to be special? Why must we not have popular villagers? Why is it so bad? Is it wrong to like cute things? Is it wrong to like guys with glasses? If liking who I like makes me unoriginal then I guess I am. To me, my villagers are mine. My Cherry has vitiligo, My Raymond laughs at Ronaldinho Soccer memes, he will proudly sport a Cherry Blossom Umbrella and parades around the island with it, My Marshal is a genius at everything, My Mitzi is a diligent student. I'll take the blow being called "unoriginal" if it means me keeping my villagers.

They're not worthless or to be ashamed having of. In fact I will pour all my (in-game) money to get people draw my villagers and have done so.

Don't be discouraged. It should be you who dictates which ones you want. Not someone else. This same goes to people feeling jealous to designer islands. Just be yourself and accept which villager you like, popular or not.

I just don't care what other people like. Some of my favorites are very popular and some aren't. But I don't devalue my own favorites just because they are popular. I'm past the stage in my life where I artificially tried to be unique and I moved onto just doing what makes me happy.

My opinion isn't influenced by the opinions of others, but I understand what you mean. When you see thousands reasons to like a villager, it kinda does make you question if your interest in one is justifiable. But people also inflate their ego by finding reasons to hate popular villagers, which is much more annoying than people being passionate about liking something. Popular means liked by a lot of people, why **** on that?

are you talking monetary or sentimental value?

monetary, hard no. everyone wanting would just drive the value up even more, compared to villagers left cold and forgotten

sentimental, that would just be up to the individual to decide on a case-by-case basis

No, I don't buy into that mentality either way - that something is less good because it's popular, and it's equally sad when people want something just because it's popular. I think the former is more cringe to me, when people refuse to like something just because too many people like it. Reminds me of when people refused to play Undertale purely because it's "too popular". If you don't like the popular thing because it in itself does not appeal to you, that's fair enough, but avoiding it just because too many people like it is so strange, like what does that accomplish, lol.

I think Marshal is adorable regardless of whether 10 people want him or 10,000 people want him. It does not make him less "valuable" to me. I don't think Raymond is very cute, and similarly, it doesn't matter to me how many people want him - it does make him more "valuable" in the sense that I would be able to sell him for more money if I encounter him, but his popularity does not sway me in wanting him on my island or not.

Arent the most popular ones, ones that aren't available by amiibo though? And of course people can play this game however they want - if following trends, using amiibo, covering your town in gold roses or time travelling is your thing, then that's your prerogative. I'm amazed how often people have opinions on how others play this game.

I have marshal and was going to get rid of him, because he's not my style visually. I still have him because his dialogue is hilarious and different. My cranky's all say the same thing. I have Lobo and Octavian because they were my favourite villagers from Wild World, even though they've lost their charm dialogue wise (octavian hasn't asked me to rate his stakiness even once).

basically, it's been a long time since city folk, so this might as well be a brand new game to me and so i don't have the attachment others do. i've been a gamer for over 20 years, and this kinda thing happens in pretty much every single game whether it's some fab character/item/piece of land whatever. things become popular and some will go to any lengths to achieve the items for the same two reasons like you said... either they actually like it and want it for themselves, or they get it to make a profit(people who get these things by accident must have a hard time sitting with the horseshoe stuffed up their neither regions lol and don't count), neither raymond or marshal appeal to me at the moment, but i haven't seen them other than in pics anyhow, who knows i might like them if i ever end up with one. i got cyd in my first 10, some like him and some dislike him for his looks(i agree his colour is awful), turns out i adore the old grumpy elephant. to each their own. what you do with your island is supposed to appeal to YOU, otherwise why do it? besides, eventually there will be some new eye-candy to replace them, and it will be the next bestestthinginthewholewideworld...

To be honest, if I wasn't attached to my villagers (Jacques really won my heart by being an absolute dork.) I would have Cyd. His design is actually cool and punk like Cherry. Cyd deserves the same hype as the new villagers have. Him being an elephant might've hurt his chances but he's so cool it's so hard to resist. If there was only an option to have 12 islanders I'd have Sherb and Cyd for sure.

I know people might move on to a new sparkly toy (i.e Marshal to Raymond thing) but nothing's changed so far. Marshal is still popular despite Ray being present. ☺ I think I love them both either way. (I just love cats and squirrels irl and in game!)
