Is it me or do villagers lose their value when EVERYONE wants em?

If we ever get a dream suite, almost every island dream we visit will have Raymond on it, just like almost every town in New Leaf had Marshall.

I sold that over-rated cat off my island and dread having to see his face over and over and over, everywhere I go!!!!

I just thought about this situation with raymond. I honestly still dont understand why he is still popular that he sells for 1000NMT+.
Yes i got him from the campsite and people got mad at me for reasons

I will admit, I didn't really set out for Judy. I think I only invited her because she was new and pretty popular. Most of my Dreamies are Snooties so it puts me in a pickle. She's still unpacking so I will see how things go once I interact with her more. I really like her eyes though. Her enormous pupils get really small when she is surprised! Heh! XD

On the other hand Idgaf about what people say about Chickens. I'm keeping Goose and hopefully ending up with Plucky.

Not to me. I mostly play by myself though and rarely go online. I also don’t trade because I like getting things on my own so I’m really unaffected by others’ opinions. I like who I like and I have my own criteria for choosing who gets to live in my island. I do admit I rarely have villagers who are in the bottom of the barrel though but I think there’s a reason why most villagers are loved or hated and most of them are aesthetic but who am I to blame people for liking the cuter ones better than the ugly ones when admittedly, I also won’t want any loser looking things walking about my own island. So let people like who they like, I guess. We should respect other people’s choices and not force our own preferences on them.

It's weird though because I haven't really seen anyone with "popular villagers" who have them just to flex (except that one user who scammed someone to look at their Raymond.....smh)

In my opinion it's exhausting seeing people who think they're edgy for NOT liking popular villagers and complain that they see the "same 20 villagers" on people's islands like ?? I'm confused as to why it bothers you so much LOL

I usually don't mind if people have an island of all S-tiered villagers or A villagers. It does get frustrating when you're hunting alongside many more people for this villagers but I truly don't care about popularity o_O I have a range of tiers for my current villagers + dream villagers, they all mean a lot to me :D

I know what you mean. I have thought about this myself, wondering why people would want the same villagers if most people are going to try to get them. I personally don't care for the most popular villagers. Some of them I just happen to like and not because they're popular.

It was the worst part of the amiibo update in New Leaf, everyone had a mixture of the same 20 villagers, so boring.
People just seem to want villagers based on popularity, it's a shame, personally I don't want to see my villagers in other towns, it's boring.

I don’t think that’s true across the board at all. I happen to like/want a lot of the most popular villagers, but it’s because I find them the best looking. That other people like/have them does not influence my decision at all—if anything, I’d prefer if they weren’t that popular!

I mean villager value should be based on how much they mean to you as a player not how much they're worth in NMT. Your love for certain villagers should not go down based off of if they are popular or not. Their worth shouldn't be dictated by how unpopular or popular they are. And if you're genuinely bothered by people who prefer more popular villagers cause they are "common" and, then that's just what you think they are worth based on their popularity, but some people really do like the popular villagers and should not be told their villagers are "worthless" and "tasteless" just because they are seen a lot. My villagers mean a lot to me because I like them, my love for them won't go down just because a lot of other people have them and like them too.

Villagers do not lose their value when everyone wants them, it's the total opposite.

What does end up happening is that the popular villagers become quite common when you visit other peoples' islands. Which isn't really a big deal in the grand scheme of things. You aren't special because you don't *like* the popular villagers -- the "iM NoT LiKe OtHeR AnImAL CroSsInG pLaYeRs" mentality....

Yes there are hundreds of villagers. And yes the fact that only a small portion of villagers are favorites just shows how poorly designed the vast majority of them are, that you have *a lot* of people (not all, but *a lot*) hating rhinos and hippos and gorillas and monkeys and kangaroos and mice and good lord the birds and gators, etc. because they have horrible models and basically rules out a chunk of the villager pool. The fact that you are limited by personality pool if you are going for one of each and 4 boys and 4 girls limits your options too.

It's not like people want to have the same villagers as everyone else on purpose. :S

I think everyone should like what they like and not be concerned about how popular it is.

I have a mixture of villagers that I would say are rather popular and others that aren't. I love having Jitters on my island just as much as I love having Erik. And it doesn't matter to me that there are thousands of other Eriks out there. This Erik is my Erik.

I will say as far as seeming my villagers on other people's islands, it does my heart good to see how many people have and love Pietro. I hate hearing stories about people hitting him with nets to make him leave. 😦 He deserves all the love.

Edit: Just to be clear though, I absolutely enjoy seeing islands with less popular villagers. I think all villagers deserve love.

Doesn't matter to me. I like who I like, and I don't care if everyone else likes them or not. I just found Marshal on an island tour yesterday and almost didn't get him even though I think he's absolutely adorable, because my boyfriend has him on his island (I've actually been telling him for a while that I wanted to steal him, but Marshal is his baby and he's never letting him move) and I thought it might be weird since we visit each other often. But when I talked to him, his pouty little face made me so happy that I had to invite him to my island. I think it's silly to enjoy or not enjoy things based on how popular they are.

I did a similar thing with Marina. I almost didn't get her because she was popular. Then I realized that I was being completely silly and I wanted that pink octopus in my town. She's adorable and I love her!

I think so yeah, because it's kinda like supply and demand. Traders are supplying more to keep up with demand. For example, when I was looking for Merengue she was HIGHLY in demand. But when I started seeing more and more threads popping up and selling her in the new neighbour network, I feel like her value/how much she was being sold for has started to decrease because of how easy she is to come by now and because of how often threads about her appear. So there just isn't a demand for her anymore, same with Zucker most people who want her have managed to get her by now I feel. Which isn't a bad thing! Infact, I think it's great because that means more people can get their dreamies for better prices.

Oh, I wasn’t saying people shouldn’t want to be special but rather that they shouldn’t worry about being special. As you said, it’s when it becomes a detriment that it needs to be put aside.

If things don’t look right to me, I simply can’t enjoy it, so, after I lost Raymond, I went on a resetting spree until I found a suitable island. It took me several hours across three days. It still wasn’t perfect, but I had to stop or otherwise I simply wouldn’t play the game at all. I am definitely never doing that again! I bought Stardew Valley a few years ago, and I still haven’t got past the first day because I couldn’t get my character to look just the way I wanted it. 😅
Oh no! That must be so stressing! I get you though. There’s always a detail that I try to ignore when I’m making things in game and if I don’t achieve it just right.... stress! ^^

I think it’s good you aren’t doing it again! I’ve also decided to just terraform here and there and slowly let my island develop around me!

I had Marina for a while, but the game chose her to move out when I got Drago from my campsite. She's definitely a cutie.

It's all subjective though. I love the rhinos, hippos, gorillas, alligators, and lions. I think quite a few users would prefer the "ugly" ones over the really cute ones. I think the design of all the animals is good. You get a few cute ones, a few weird ones, and a few butt ugly ones. It balances out.

I think there’s something like...popularity burnout.

When something is (rightfully) popular and more and more people start showing their support for it, there comes this point where its value can’t keep up with people’s high opinion. The value isn’t actually changed—they are still objectively just as good as before—but it seems lowered because it just can’t keep up with people’s expectations. The thought is that no one thing/person/experience can be THAT good.

It’s definitely happened to me with Raymond. When I first saw him I thought he had a great design. I immediately knew that his look would appeal to others and he’d be very popular. Now that that’s come true, his actual design isn’t suddenly less appealing to me, but I am burned out by the hype around him. Because I’m confronted with that hype every day, I can’t help but compare him to it and find him lacking. But he isn’t inherently lacking in appeal—he just falls short of those extremely exaggerated expectations.

This makes me wonder whether some of the villagers were just designed to be ugly. I think if the point of the game was that they were all supposed to be super cute and adorable it might take away from the life of Animal Crossing a little. Idk, there is something to be said about people wanting to play the game the way they think it should be, and for some people that means no less-than-gorgeous villagers, but there's also the fact that we're all voluntarily immersing ourselves into a world full of Japanese game designers' furry OCs.

I'm curious to know what went behind creating all these characters, what the thought for making Tabby or Barold look how they do was, etc. People complain so much about how the new games' villagers are less rude to you, I figure similar would happen if they decided to take out or change all the commonly-considered-to-be-ugly ones.

I mean, I guess I can see them losing a bit of value. I don't really.. pay much mind to it? I have villagers I really like in my town and that makes me happy.

TBH. This kind of discourse is so shoved into everyone else's throats the same way how "popular villager" stans are being absolutely vocal and rabid.
This entire post perfectly describes how I feel about this whole Raymond (and other popular villager) situation. I wanted to write something similar to this but I didn't know how to word it properly. Thank you so much for writing this, lots of people really need to hear it lol

It makes me sad since a lot of people are specifically getting Raymond as a status symbol and to show him off, not because they actually want him. I've genuinely liked him from the minute he was revealed and have bonded with him in my game so it just makes me feel bad, idk ;w;

I wish people can just like who they like and move on and not make a thousand posts saying the same thing each time about how they don't like Raymond which is apparently cool now I guess? It.. kinda makes me feel guilty for even having him, cause I feel like whenever they bring up "annoying" Raymond fans that I'm automatically grouped in with them :/

I love Raymond but every time someone makes a post about his popularity it's just bringing up more of the same drama that they're complaining about. It's really bumming me out now.

I'm probably also guilty of wanting Villagers that everyone wants if you look at my sig. The problem for me is that for the most part, these have always been my dreamies (except Audie but who couldn't like the backstory behind her design) But I guess part of the reason they are so popular is because they look so good, so here I am, having the same villagers as everyone else ;-;

I guess at least I'm not aboard the Raymond hype train
