Could you explain your perspective to me? I'm really curious!

I definitely have favourite fruit (oranges, apples, peaches) and a least favourite fruit (pears). To me, the best outcome is if my native fruit is a fruit I don't mind but not my absolute favourite, because then I can get my favourite fruit and plant it all over my island for $$$. So there are 3-4 fruits I'm happy to have as my native fruit, but I'm not aiming for a specific fruit. However, I notice it seems really important to a lot of people here, and I want to understand!

But I'm kind of old-fashioned, foreign fruit isn't the best way to make money any more, just one source of income...

So what's the appeal?

Is it because of the passport? (I love having oranges on my passports, but I hate not being able to plant more orange trees without shorting myself of bells.) Is it because you don't play online? Is it for roleplaying/flavour reasons (this is super compelling to me, it feels like an important part of my town that oranges are native to it - and the villagers reference your native fruit)? Or something else?

It's just the fruit that represents you and your island, you know. It's a little bit of everything. Peaches are pink which is my favorite color, which looks the prettiest to me on the passport. I prefer the Peach furniture and prefer my starter lazy to have them. I want my island be filled with trees of peaches because I think they look the nicest. I like that my villagers are drinking peach tea/juice because I love peach iced tea so much.

Oooh, the starter homes are a great point!

So you don't replace your native fruit with foreign fruit?

I replaced all mine with peaches, because I like it next most after oranges ^^ But since I played the stalk market a lot and have access to a lot of bells and NMT, I might put the oranges back... I just can't get over the idea it's 'wrong' xD Tbh it might be a relief to stop picking the fruit...

For me it really didn’t matter which fruit I got, I was more focused on the starting villagers. I ended up with apples which were not thrilling to me but I loved my starters so I kept them! I now have an orchard with a few trees of every fruit and it’s fine :) I like cherries best in game, but I didn’t want to reset and end up with villagers I don’t like 🙈

I personally wanted pears, I like it's neutral colour scheme, and that's what I got lol, but it is disappointing we don't have perfect fruit! I just hope those and the rest of the fruit we don't have become a part of the game again.

I really wanted Mangoes and Bananas because I live in a tropical country, and it's one of our primary exports. But it wasn't in the game, so I chose the next tropical fruit I could ever get, which is oranges.

I forgot about the perfect fruit!!!! That's also a really good reason. (RIP perfect fruits)

Thank you so much, everyone! I feel like I'm so stuck in my ways from the first two games xD Whereas everyone else is having so much fun with their native fruit, or going with the flow :) I might give it a try and make an orange grove!

edit: And I hope they add back the tropical fruit too. I LOVE mangoes and would love to have mango trees! ;-;

I've never cared about my native fruit, so when I got cherries in NH I didn't think much of it. But since I went into this game with nothing planned out in my head, I named my island Marmalade on the spot because I thought it was a cute name and now in hindsight I feel super dumb for not having oranges as my native fruit lol

Personally, I’m attached to my fruit now and would feel sad getting a different one if I had to reset for whatever reason. I think it’s like you described: peaches have become a symbol of my Island so to speak.

Similarly, I wouldn’t want my least favorite fruit (pears) on the passport. It’s not even that I mind their look; there’s just something about pears that doesn’t feel right to me. That I wouldn’t want my Island—or myself by extension—represented by a pear. I think it’s because I have specific associations with each of the fruits:
• peaches/cherries are cute and flirty
• apples are solid and classic
• oranges are tropical and refreshing
• pears are ??

It’s this meh-ness that makes them undesirable to me. They stand for nothing imo, and “nothing” makes for a poor symbol.

These are just my own, very subjective and pretty silly thoughts on the matter. I’m sure others love pears. They just see something in them that I don’t, and that’s great!

I started with apples, and now I don't think I have a single apple tree on my island. I condensed all fruit trees to a small orchard that I imagine my nearby villager owns. I have oranges, cherries and peaches there, no apples or pears :P and apples are my favorite fruit irl so that is strange~

I think people's problem with pears is that they are too green against the green of the trees, there's not much color contrast and it's boring to look at.

I was hoping for pears this time around for a couple of reasons.

1 - I've always gotten apples or cherries in previous games. They're nice, but I wanted something different.

2 - Oranges and peaches aren't really my favorites, especially as the seasons change.

3 - I love the way pears look during cherry blossom time and in the fall/winter. I know a lot of people don't care for them in the spring/summer, but that doesn't bother me.

For the most part, it doesn't much matter. I have two mixed-fruit orchards (all the trees together, but grouped by fruit), and the only other place you'll find my native tree is at my entrance and around my shops/plaza. My native flower is windflower and I like they way the basic ones look with pears best.

There was always a chance for perfect fruit to ne in the game until we found out they weren't. Now that I do know we get DIY recipes for our native fruit in one of the beginner sets, I mighg have been a little more insistent on oranges (but sice I was already resetting for the airport, I would've been hapy with anything but pears.)

I wanted apples because I loved the perfect fruit version, then I found out they don't appear in this game...quite disappointing, since I reset for a few hours only for that (for some reason the game didn't feel to give me apples, sigh) and without perfect fruit I may have settled for cherries or peaches. 😔

It stems from New Leaf probably, when the town fruit was also a perfect variant and everyone wanted apple because they were the best looking perfect fruit.

If perfect fruit was a thing in New Horizons, I'd do the same now with cherries because they were actually the best perfect fruit. Instead, I went with my second favourite (oranges) so that I could plant my favourite (cherries) around the place and make fat bank off of them.

Lol I've been resetting for fruit since the old GC days, I don't really know why, I guess it's because it's the fruit that's tied to your town and I want it to be my favourite one.
