It may seem awkward at first, but once the initial surprise of him telling you is over I am sure things will return back to normal. I would just focus on the things that made you guys friends in the first place, whatever it may be that you have in common, like talking about video games (just an example). Once you guys start having fun/being friends again, it will be much easier for you and him being gay will not be a big deal at all.
