When I grow hybrids, I clump together all of the same kind and then put empty spaces in the middle. The problem is, I'm growing a ton of flowers but not the kind or species that I want. What are all the ways flowers can be encouraged to get down and dirty with each other?

What I do is plant mine diagonally. I don't put them next to each other or clump them, just have them diagonally. Then, when I water them, I get more hybrids. I also have the Beautiful Ordinance, so I don't know if that helps it or not. >~<

I'm having the same issue. I'm not clear on what I need to do. I've been planting rows of flowers right next to each other, but a space between the rows. Should I plant 'flower, space, flower, space' or something else. The best way to position the flowers is a bit confusing. I get the fertilizer and watering part. I'm getting a ton of black roses, but only two purple roses for example.

checkerboard pattern always works best for me

if single color planted then

XOXOXO
OXOXOX
XOXOXO

where x=flower and o=empty space

and if multiple colors (like say if trying to make orange roses)

XOXOXO
OYOYOY
XOXOXO

where x=one color flower y=other color flower and o=empty spaces

of course once I get at least 2 hybrids I just ditch all the regular flowers and start breeding the hybrids with each other using the first pattern

Agreed on the checkerboard pattern. But the trick is not to have too many of them being watered a day. For example, water the roses Monday, tulips Tuesday, etc. I think only five hybrids can spawn a day, six with fertilizer (correct me if I'm mistaken, it's been a while since I read that info), so the more flowers you water, the less off a chance you'll get what you want. The Beautiful Ordinance is a must if you don't want your other flowers to wilt while breeding a specific type.

I don't do a checkerboard pattern I plant them side by side. Make sure you're planting the right color combinations as well. I grouped a couple color combinations together and watered them on my first day, the second day I had a hybrid. I've done it that way this whole time and have tons. Good luck! :D

I'm pretty sure some hybrid x hybrid combos also produce regular colors as well as the hybrid color so breeding 2 of them might give you a regular one anyway; like if i'm breeding pink roses I usually get red, white, or purple more often than pink

but i usually breed 2 types of hybrids at once using this pattern:
OOXOO
OXOXO
OOXOO

X = flower, O = space

if I do 2 of those and water only those I always get a hybrid (unless it was raining or villagers watering spawned a flower elsewhere)

I plant my roses in a square if that makes sense. Looks something like this:
XXX
XOX
XXX

And I'll stack as many of those around as I need and sometimes I may leave a corner out, but for whatever reason on my cycling they breed really well like this. I've only done it with roses so I couldn't tell you about other flower breeding methods. Put Jacob's Ladders by what you want to hybridize if you've got them.

only gold and gold will spawn a regular flower (yellow with none of same)

all the rest have a potential for same and other similar colors though (but at the same time iirc if you do stuff like take the pink roses that spawned from breeding pink roses you'll only get pink if you breed them together)

That's exactly what I do, also enable the beautiful ordinance and use a golden shovel with fertilizer as well.

does the golden shovel even *actually* do anything for hybreeding

I've heard of people using it with the fertilizer, but as far as documented info sources go the only "use" for it I see is the same as all previous games (money tree) which is overall pretty useless unless you just want to make cheap quick and easy regular trees

I've actually never thought of doing that tbh so thank you so much

I also place my flowers in a checkerboard pattern, but for hybrids, sometimes making an alternating line would work well enough for me to get a couple hybrids to then breed with fertilizer. Like, if I was breeding red and yellow cosmos to make orange ones:
RYRYRYRYRY
(in my old town I had my paths outlined in red and yellow cosmos and it worked really well in making orange ones)

and then water them. That worked for me to get a couple initially, then fertilizer kinda helps. I've never had a lot of good luck with making blue violets. A lot of the time, fertilizer would get me purple or white violets instead of blue ones. Pink tulips are always hard for me, too.
