If you were given a chance, how would you make Hippos and Gorilla villagers be appealing for everyone?

I don't hate the hippos but just... none of their designs are appealing, they're either ugly or boring. I don't mind Biff but eh
I think a huge improvement would be removing those damn teeth! They're so blocky and gross : (
Also, fix the weird noses... Rhinos don't have noses like that so why do the hippos :/

gorillas? I seriously don't see myself ever liking them. There's already a pretty good diversity of them currently but I can't bring myself to like any of them. Just hate their awkward proportions and pointy heads :<

I always thought I didn’t like them. But then I actually looked at all of them and realised theres only like 1 out of each species that I don’t like. I think they get a bad rep for just one or two villagers

I generally think people don’t like them because they are pretty tall and top heavy. In my experience, people prefer the smaller or more equally proportioned villagers like cats, dogs and squirrels. I think this is also why the rhinos, anteaters and lions are particularly unpopular.

I personally like the models myself, but I guess you could make their heads a bit smaller and in keeping with their bodies.

Perhaps give them monochromacy eyes and a frowny face?

Hippos don't really bother me. I invited Bertha to my second village. She hasn't moved in yet, but I love her color scheme.

As far as gorillas go, the more I look at them, the more I honestly like Boone, Hans, and Louie. And I think Cesar would be cute without the mustache. I've had Al before in NL, and I think his eyes and lips may be what bother me most about his design.

I do feel like some of these villagers get too much hate though. I don't think every villager has to appeal to everyone. Even if they don't fit my style personally, I think villager diversity is a good thing. Perhaps they don't work for me, but maybe they do for other people.

I don't think every villager has to be appealing to everyone, or to a majority of the playerbase for that matter. I think that hippos and gorillas are fine; they don't need really any changes.

i think i'd like hippos more if the teeth weren't shown on every single one. bertha is really the only one i like, other than that i feel like their designs just don't do them justice. ​

Hmmm making for the hippos cuter would probably be making the snouts a little smaller so it doesn't block half their face) and maybe smaller teeth? I think the color schemes for a lot of them doesn't help either. Like there are a bunch bright neons with bright contrasting clothings

For the gorillas I think making them more appealing would be pushing them towards something more realistic - like Boone. (Tried to draw them cute but I wasn't able to come up with anything I was happy with)

I don't think you can make any of them cute. They're all based off of a model design and basically recolored, given different names, and personalities. I've never seen a cute hippo or gorilla in real life or on Google. Speaking of gorillas, why didn't they bring Yodel back? He's literally an islander gorilla.

i don’t think every single gorilla or hippo that could be made would be ugly, however i don’t find any of the currently existing gorillas and hippos to be very beautiful. giving them cuter faces could be a possible solution. i would love a childlike hippo with those teeth, that could be cute

As for gorillas, I think they either need to look more like gorillas or a little less like gorillas. They're in a weird place as they are, where you can tell they're supposed to look like gorillas but the proportions are super funky weird.

Or the "less gorilla" is more of a cutesy look that I think could work well for animal crossing:

Not realistic obviously, but super cutesy which would translate well into this game and definitely improve popularity.

I'm not big on either species in real life so that probably doesn't help my opinion of the AC versions of them. I wouldn't necessarily change anything about their models either and there are some people who love them as they are so why change anything? Not everything has to be super cute to be likable or popular and if you like them and want them to live on your island, that's all that matters.

Oh I think it would be entirely possible to make anything appear cute, yes, even the hippos and gorillas. Pastels are a super popular color scheme. Maybe lighter natural colors if not that? Big sparkly eyes (there weren't too many popular cubs until Judy came about). Or something unique to appeal to a larger audience (like raymond's glasses?)

And I love Hans! When winter rolls around he'll be the first one I search for and invite to my island. Can't say the same for the hippos though, but Hippeaux is gross and can jump off a cliff.

I meant their appearance! They look pretty docile! Most of them don't look like they're about to rip your head off at first glance like wild cats or other wild animals.

To me, they look like capybaras but bigger.

Hippos are mostly big and rolly-polly, maybe making them adorably round or just make their nose smaller and teeth and keep the rest I think people might consider!

I feel like the gorillas look too much like triangles with their really wide shoulders and really narrow hips. I think if the shoulders were not as wide and the skulls were more round instead of pointy, it would go a long way. Looking at them again, I think a lot of the problem is that they tried to give most of the gorillas lips for some reason. Instead of keeping the lips on the snooty females and making them smaller, they span across their entire space.

You know who I think did a gorilla character really well in making them stand out, but not look weird in a cuter art style? Aggretsuko's Gori. She's a gorilla with lips. She still has wider shoulders and narrower feet. Her head is rounder and the face is more defined. She has makeup on, but her lipstick doesn't span her entire muzzle area.

Also, there just isn't a good variety with the gorillas. The only really interesting ones were Boone, Louie, and Hans. Rocket is the only really themed one to go with the speed racer villagers. Just flipping through my other amiibo cards you have vilagers that instantly draw your eyes with other species. Like Kabuki's face paint, Roscoe with his vivid red eyes, Lionel looks like a traditional english gentleman with his white mane, Diana a white deer, Cookie a pastel pink dog, and Phoebe with her brilliant colored tailfeathers. There is no fruit or sweets based gorilla. There is no gorilla with a bright color palette. The closest is Jane, but her purple is very toned down and not stand out like Bob. They all look pretty generic and boring.
