OK, I'm sure there are fans of the "unpopular" villagers. However, I feel like the "unpopular" ones are so drawn ugly with the full intent to BE ugly. Do you think it's possible to actually give these villagers justice? Like me, I actually like Rhinos like Renee and Merengue and Elephants like Tia, Chai, Margie and Cyd. It's because they were designed properly. If you had the chance to design a hippo/gorilla/monkey or whatever unpopular villager group, how would you approach it? Any ideas that might spark some interest to the cute-loving majority of AC? or are these villagers doomed to be unpopular?
If you were given a chance, how would you make Hippos and Gorilla villagers be appealing for everyone?

I really don’t know how they messed up the Hippos. Do you know moomins? They are moomintrolls, not hippos, but they look like hippos. Easy solution here: make Hippos in AC look more like moomins. Easy.

For hippo I would take away the
HUGE NOSE HOLES
and take away the 2 HUGE TEETH
Real hippos dont show there teeth why did they make them like this

I think their intent was to make tigers intimidating. Which kind of translated poorly in design...
I kinda liked Boone on a mystery island. Then he was obsessive about my biceps. I rejected him to live on my island and he said “I’m just happy I got to meet your biceps”. That sealed the deal on my opinion lol

I think no matter what you do, they’re never going to be as appealing to you as other animals if you don’t like the base model in the first place
but if I had to design one I would try to only pick 1-3 colours to work with. the problem I have with a lot of villagers is just that they have wayyy too much going on. a trend I’ve noticed is that simple villagers with simple designs are nearly always big hits, and if it’s an unpopular species the simple one will usually be the most popular in their species (e.g: Hornsby, Apollo)

Neither one of these species look appealing to me. But yeah seconding the moomin idea, since they're actually really cute. Fixing the general shape of the hippo villagers along with the eyes + mouth would go a long way. As for the gorillas... I'm not sure tbh. Probably also changing the face.

I think this idea is actually brilliant. Hippos are quite docile and cute-looking IRL too. I can't believe they'd do hippos dirty like that.

I think when they were making the villagers they were too busy making sure they were
Recognised as hippos
that they forgot to care about making them cute
That's a huge thing with creating characters they focus on making sure they are easily identified but forget the likable part lol

Hippos have so so much potential, but almost all of them are just a single color with different eyes. It just makes them boring. The notable exceptions (Harry, Hippeux) fall in to the intentionally ugly category. I truly believe if they tried to make more unique designs for them, people would like hippos.
I kind of wish I had a colorless base of the hippo model from AC so I could make my own hippo to prove this point. Heck, I would love to see what everyone else would create with something like that too. A full on hippo community workshop to redeem them.
Gorillas could be improved a lot just model wise. Their heads really don't need to be that tall. I also feel gorillas would benefit a ton from being made fluffier and not quite so... angular? Also remove the lips and butt cheeks a lot of them have. I don't even understand why they defined the lips on so many of the gorillas. That's not exactly what actual gorillas are known for.

i cant think of how to fix hippos other than removing those crazy teeth. gorillas though...the shape of their model is so unappealing. it's like, triangular? the heads do not look good on those bodies. and pleaaase remove the booty cheeks omg
Gorillas need a lot of work because real gorillas don't really walk on their hind legs save a few exceptions out there.
I feel like their bodies are fine, but their heads are just off. Not every gorilla has a pointy head. Some have a tall narrow oval skull, some have pointy rounded heads, and others have completely round heads. And I noticed their heads are lacking that abundance of fur real gorillas have. It doesn't feel right.
