Ideas for supernatural creatures?

Im writing a supernatural story about a town that protects itself from the supernatural using a clock tower that plays a song between the hours of six and seven pm. Supernatural creatures hate the song and hence do not come near the town, keeping the people there safe from harm. Problem is, I'm having a hard time thinking of what those creatures should be.

I don't want a werewolf/vampire theme, that's been done way too many times. I'm trying to draw inspiration from real superstitions like opals bringing bad luck, lucky rabbit's foot, counting crows, horseshoes and iron, etc. I just need ideas for what kind of creatures I should associate these things with. My first idea was to personify the idea of the grim reaper, just call them reapers, and have them look like humans. They are immortal and choose humans to bond with through their venom, which is scented with sensual smells. Once bonded, they use the human as a marionette and slowly (or suddenly) drain their life away, causing quicker aging or premature death. Some reapers may choose to slow down and take their time, whereas others kill and take lives constantly. After killing a human they must quickly find another to bond with, as human life gives them their immortality, so they will die if they don't. They can choose to expose themselves or not, but if they do, they can't go back, if they don't, they remain invisible.

The others I was thinking of are legends from native mythology, such as the Amarok wolf and the skin walkers. Skin walkers are people who can turn into any animal they want, so long as they are wearing their hyde. The Amarok is a wolf that preyed on hunters in the night.

Let me know if you have any other ideas!

maybe some sort of rogue spirit, something along the lines of a banshee but not quite. ghosts are interesting supernatural creatures, and theres so many things you can do with them. i've actually been on a huge kick with ghosts recently, especially ones from other countries like the kuntilinak and.. creepy things, but thats besides the point.
although the whole reaper idea sounds really fascinating. but build more onto it, they look like humans but do they have any special feature that stands out? odd skin colour, glowing eyes, teeth? anything to give it off? or are they just like other humans and blend in perfectly? it interests me to find out where you're gonna go with this :)

Thanks so much for responding!! I love the ghost idea, I will definitely look more into t :) I was also considering some things with doppelgangers as well. The reapers were formerly humans, but were turned into reapers after reaper venom was out in their system after death (via drinking or needle) when they have a desire to feed on life their skin will go pale and their eyes go black with a tiny red pupil. They have sharp teeth for biting and putting venom into their victims. They were created when a reckless royal family from medieval Scandinavia continued picking fights with their neighboring city. After their deaths, an alchemist spared the lives of the children and mother by making them drink a special concoction after they died, which would soon become reaper venom, and brought them back to life as reapers. The father who started the wars was locked up without any human contact, given he was dangerous.

so, do other reapers spread the venom, or is it one person putting the venom into corpses after death?
also they're kinda like vampires in the sense that they bite others, but instead of taking blood, they give venom? that's actually kinda cool, if i have this concept down right.

It can be both, really. Some reapers want others to join them so they'll go to morgues and inject as many bodies as possible. And yeah, you got it! I just hope they're not too similar.

makes alot of sense. it's not too similar and actually kinda creative, it's like a zombie/vampire hybrid and it's really interesting. zombie in the fact that it affects the dead and spreads the venom and vampire in the fact that they feed off the living. i like it!

Yay, so glad you do!!! Maybe I could even add something like if you were injured when you died but the venom brings you back, you'll have the injury forever

How about the skeletons/ghosts of musicians? It's kind of a goofy idea, but it does kind of connect to the song idea.

I like the idea of the ghosts, or the ghosts of the people who composed it and the connection to the reapers.

care to explain what you mean by that? i think i get it but i'm not sure

Ok, I'll give you an example

Let's say you died from bleeding to death after losing a limb. If the venom revives you, you will be conscious, no longer feel the pain and be able to function normally, but you will have to live with the injuries that killed you until they naturally heal. In this case it wouldn't heal, but if you died from a slit throat, you would have to let that heal after coming back to life, as it wouldn't magically disappear.

ohhh! i get it now. like if someone was shot in the heart, and they died but came back with the venom, they'd still have the wound and everything till it healed? kinda like regular wounds?
interesting

Yes that's exactly it!!

Here's an idea!

The ghost of Friday the 13th. Everyone that's died on that day is combined into one ghost, and it HATES the clock tower song because it's also the Friday the 13th survivor's anthem. Silly, I know, but clever?
