i mean, i always act like i really love animal crossing, and i do, but i feel like a fake fan because new leaf is my first game. i want to get wild world eventually, just so i can at least say new leaf isn't the oldest game i've played.

this happens a lot, and it really just adds up to me feeling guilty for being new and young.

i hate that new leaf is my first game. i hate being a fake fan. am i the only one?

You are totally not a fake fan! I started with WW but everyone still spoke about the GC version. You wouldn't be any less of a fan of a TV series if you only started watching it at Season 3 :)

Also, though I still have a WW cartridge - going backwards is really quite difficult! The graphics actually hurt my eyes a bit now.

What??? New Leaf is plenty of people's first AC game, including mine. And the idea of being a "fake fan" of anything is ridiculous. You're fine!

New leaf was my first game, and the first game of my friend who got me into it. It was probably a ton of AC fans' first game, actually.

Don't feel bad. The whole point of series like AC is to release a new game every few years to draw in new fans. You are a result of their successful line of games. And, now that you have been introduced to the series, you can play old games if you want to!

I started on the gamecube game. The first one to come to North America. Yet I didn't even know Nintendo made more AC games until acnl came out. I thought the first one was the only game they made!

You shouldn't feel like a fake fan, but I do think it's worth checking out the others. The GC is my first one and I would strongly recommend it.

Now New Leaf isn't my first AC game, but it is the best AC-game I have played. You shouldn't feel like a fake fan just because you missed out on previous games frustrations, like in the GC version, you couldn't just hand all the fossils in your inventory to Blathers, you had to first mail them away at the post-office. To get them in the mail the next day and then go to the Museum and give them to Blathers, one at a time. So even though previous games have their charms, they can also be very frustrating. And you should definitely not feel bad about that. A fan is a fan, no matter how many games they have played in a series. I would suggest being happy instead, that you didn't have to go through all that frustration and get to enjoy New Leaf with all of us now :D

Precisely what jcnorn said. Think of it as quality hours over quantity. While I enjoyed many hours of the gamecube game back in the day, if someone had put AC and ACNL in front of me back then, I would have played ACNL. I love the old game, but I love the new one even more. I'd say this is a fabulous time to become an Animal Crossing fan!

I agree with this, but slightly differently. I WANTED to like Animal Crossing. I played the Gamecube game. I only played for a month. I played Wild World. I played it for maybe 2 months. I wondered if Animal Crossing wasn't for me, so never bought the Wii game. I decided to give the series one last chance with NL. Honestly, I like NL much more than the other games. It feels like there's more to do. I've been playing the game on and off since it came out and have put tons of hours into it. I'm glad I gave it another chance. I liked it enough I even bought Happy Home Designer (which I also like a lot).

NL is a great time to get into the series.

I've played AC since Game Cube so super trust me when I say you are NOT a fake fan. It's not like there's a story sequence to AC so it's okay to just jump in on the new ones. NL is arguably the best one in the series anyway because it has so many fun features. Also if you HAVE to play WW look up 3DS emulator and you can download and play it on your computer for free.

I wouldn't bother with WW unless you get it free, I started with NL and WW is just so bare in comparison. It's got some cute dialogue tho. Like Kody not being happy with me sneaking up on him at night and threaten to stop collecting shells with me. I have to say, I've never been made to feel like a lessor fan on here for starting on NL.

Well, technically, City Folk was my first game, but Zip Lash was my first Chibi-Robo game! That doesn't make me a "pretend" or "fake" fan!

I think the idea of being a fake/real fan of a game is kind of bizarre. Not stupid, just really bizarre. When I fell in love with the Final Fantasy games I started with the most popular one FF13, and now I'm a fan of all of the series now. I did have WW back when the game came out, but when I decided to get New leaf it felt like a whole 'nother game, so really you aren't missing out, unless you want to collect most of the AC games for show purposes...that's another story :)

I played the others and loved them, but everytime a new one comes out, I often wish I hadn't played the others. The reason is because, I remember getting so excited to go to Nooks everyday to see what furniture was for sale. It was all new to me. Sure, New Leaf has new pieces, but also a ton of the old. Fishing and bug hunting were also more exciting. I remember catching my first shark, and getting bit by a tarantula. It wasn't as exciting in New Leaf because I had experienced it before. The Holidays are pretty much the same for me. The only one I was excited to play was Halloween, but that's because of the Creepy set.

There's no such thing as a 'fake fan'. It's just made up by people who feel the need to be 'superior' in every little way.
Every new game boosts the popularity of Animal Crossing for a while; when I got Wild World so many in my class had it as well, despite never having heard of the Gamecube version. The same thing happens with every version. But it's simple.
If you like/love Animal Crossing, you are an Animal Crossing Fan. And you have nothing to prove.

New Leaf is my first and I've definitely been around long enough to have played them all. So don't feel bad, I think that is a lot of peoples' experience; don't feel like you have to force yourself to play a game just to fulfill some weird stereotype.

New Leaf is my first too!
Truthfully, if you enjoy or like something, I think you can consider yourself a fan of it. ;)
