Hello everyone! I'm starting to reach that point in my town where I think I want to begin landscaping -- eg laying down paths, etc. -- but I'm not sure where to begin. So many of you have beautiful, detailed towns, and I'm wondering what your tips are for a beginner? What rookie mistakes to avoid? Any advice you have it, please feel free to share :) xx

I started with my trees, I gathered a basket of each fruit type, cut down all my trees, then planted them where they looked nice ^^ Then think about the theme/ over all feel you want to have for your town so you can pick out a nice path ^^ If you don't already have a second character, I would think about making one just so you can keep all the pattens that some paths require ^^

you should decide a color scheme and begin breeding hybrids. ex: some people go with pale colored flowers, pinks, cool tones, warm tones, or very vibrant flowers. also gather some bamboo, bushes and clovers to decorate along your paths.

Get a golden axe to cut down all the trees you need to, a silver axe to make special stumps, a golden watering can, a golden shovel and some bells so you can plant trees without having to buy normal saplings, use flowers/patterns and lay them down to make a basic outline of your town and where you want paths to go, have a theme in mind!!! Also, I would make sure to have most of your dream villagers before you start. I started working on my town before I got my dreamies, and trying to work around them as they eventually moved in was hard.

Personally I started with my paths... I cut down/dug up everything, laid my paths, and then planted trees/flowers/bushes around them. Of course this involves a lot of trial and error, as there were many times I planted a bunch of trees/bushes and then I decided I didn't like their arrangement... but obviously it's a task that requires a lot of time, so you just have to be patient with it to get your town exactly how you want it :)

Also, PWPs are an important aspect to consider.. they are relatively easy to add in after your town is landscaped, but for ones that cannot be destroyed/moved it's important to have an idea of where you're going to place them before you go all out in your landscaping.

Try finding some paths which only need 1 or 2 squares. This will leave you with more room for clothes.
Then run around your town so you can see where you want your paths.

You can take a look at my dream address for some ideas on how to set up your town.

First things first, you have to plan your path.
(also as Crunchy and Kaylee suggested, clear out all of your trees too. Now is your chance at getting a fresh start. Out with the old, in with the new!)

I started with going from all of my major landmarks, and creating a simple straight path to each of them.
This makes it easy to navigate your town, and makes it great for you to run around.
Landmarks would be your beach entrances, Roost, Town Hall, Town Square, Re-Tail, your house, and your main villager district.
Start from the landmark, and make the path go straight in, until it hits the rest of your path.
You dont really need to make a main path to every one of your villager's homes.
I'd recommend keeping it easy by planning the main path just to the district you want your villager's houses, and make smaller paths branching off to them.

Now is also a good time to consider moving any of your bridges.
Once you kind of know your main route around the town, you may find a better spot for them.
Be aware of the PWP spacing it needs before demolishing, because its a lot larger than others when first plotting.
It may not even go back into the same spot it was demolished from, if say a villagers house is right next to it.

Once you have your paths laid out, now you can find your free spaces to work with.
You can start planning out the bordering for your paths.
Its a good idea to line paths with bushes and trees, to prevent you from trampling flowers while you're running around on your new paths.
I like having bushes line the bottom, and having the trees be above the paths.
That way your view of the path isn't obscured by the leaves of the trees, and its much easier catching bugs that spawn on trees above you.
It will take a lot of playing around to get things the way you like it, so always look to revise things as you're walking around your town.

You dont have to commit to any path pattern right now, because you can always change it by replacing the pattern on the character that laid it down, which will replace ALL patterns placed on the ground with the new one.
If you don't have the QR machine unlocked yet, start talking to Sable every day. Once a day, the conversation with her progresses, and eventually she will give you access to it.
Once you have it, you can start looking online for different QR paths to use, and you can easily play around with out trying different ones, now that the patterns are laid.

Now you can start looking where you want to put your Public Works Projects.
This is all up to you how you do it, but there is a handy trick to move PWP efficiently.
You can build and demolish one thing per day, but its important to do it in this order:
1-Plan a new PWP, and put up the gyroid. DO NOT PAY IT OFF.
2-Go back to Isabelle, and demolish a PWP.
3-NOW you can pay off your new PWP, and both will be changed out come 6AM.

When it comes to new villager move ins, you should plan on plot resetting any new comers.
This will keep your paths and flower patches safe, and you can design a little residential district for them.
Look up a guide on how to do this.

As Lizzy has suggested, you can also start planning a theme for your town in terms of color.
There are countless different ways you can do this, so try lots of different things!

You wont really be 'done' in your town, but you eventually, you will run out of spaces.
Best part about locking down ALL of your spaces in your town, is that NO MORE fossils, gyroids, weeds or random flowers will spawn again.
If you are done with your fossil collection, it may be a good idea to do this.
You can also set up a dedicated space for your daily spawns, and you will have just one area to go to each morning to collect your new things. (if you do this, I suggest by a cliff, so that you can roll a chance to get a Jacob's Ladder)

Once all of your flower patches are locked, (meaning without any open spaces), you can start breeding new hybrids on your beach.
Breeding flowers on the beach is MUCH nicer, because your villagers wont add to those patches, and you can control your breeding.
You can place out 5 pairs of breeders a night, and if there is no open spaces for breeding in your main town, every pair on the beach will breed a new flower (or so).

My suggestion for anything in your town is to always look for ways to revise and make things look better.
New ideas will come to you as you are working on different spaces, so go back over older areas and see what you can improve!

Hope this helps!

Kaede's suggestions are excellent!!

If you want to think through the placement of all your PWPs, you can get yourself some graph paper and sketch out how you'd like your town to look. This will help you plot where existing stuff is (like rocks & ponds & the river) and help you figure out spacing. You could even do a couple of copies of your basic plan with the unmoveable stuff included, then start pencilling in where you'd like things to go. As you confirm or finalize certain areas (e.g. if you put in a permanent garden with PWPs that you want to keep, have some basic permanent pathways laid out), you can draw this in with pen or marker, and just keep pencilling away at the rest of it.

Sometimes what looks good on paper doesn't always translate to looking good in your actual town, but generally thinking through/plotting out all this stuff beforehand can help you work towards the overall vision for your town.

Have fun!

You are all so helpful!! This is a lot to consider -- thank you so much for your input :'D x

I made a guide of sorts here on how I decorate. Feel free to skim through it cause it's kind of long ^^; I've just restarted my third town and am working on another guide that shows pictures of each step and the whole process, but it's going to take a long time, so I made that one for now.

I know this is misstayleigh's thread but I have a question. If you cut down all the trees in your town and you have perfect town status, would that ruin it?

Yes, because the perfect town status relies on a certain number of trees being in your town among other things

I cut all my trees down after I had perfect town status ...and then I replanted a ton with trees made from fruit - as long as they all sprout the next day you *should* be able to maintain perfect town status. In theory.

My advice to anyone reading this: get the golden watering can from having a perfect town for 15 days. THEN cut down all the trees.

I learned this the hard way :(

I usually try to figure out where I want to place my paths first and only cut down trees that are in the way. Then I mark the rocks so I'll remember which ones aren't the gem rock, and plant trees/bushes around them so when I hit them with my shovel I won't have to dig holes.
Then I start working on flowers and moving trees around. To get a lot of flowers at once I'll go to the island and do a lot of tours that have flowers and just gather up as many as I can carry over and over until my basket is full (usually 3 tours = full basket).
Once I have enough flowers I'll start lining my paths with them, and making flower gardens to grow hybrids. I like to plant flowers around each house and building too.
I've never cut down all my trees at once because I don't like using a lot of fruit trees and getting enough saplings is time consuming.

Plan out what you want to do first
Once you find a path, pick a point ( i started at my mayors house) and just imagine pathing from point a to point b, then making point B, point A and get to your next destination
if you are gonna use bushes or trees on your pathing, i reccomend jsut dropping the bag where you think they will go, before planting, and once you have them laid out, plant them (That way you dont waste any!)

You might also take a pic of your map and edit it and draw where you want your stuff to be roughly then go in game and see if it works. I laid down my ideal path placement yesterday actually and started off that way.

I'm also a first time designer but I highly recommend downloading some QR codes that mark where your things plan to go. You want to map out and plan before you set anything permanent down, but I have these special codes that help me decide where things are going to go so that I may begin planting stuff and have a designated path set up around the greenery.

Here's a link to the post.

TIP :

One mistake I made when I fist began to fix up my town is that I began to plant bushes like crazy. I didn't realize that each bush has a different time out of the year when they bloom. I also did not realize that even though the Azalea bush and the Sweet Olive bush basically look the same, they bloom different flowers. All this can look a little weird and out of place once they begin to bloom and you notice your pattern being thrown off.

Unfortunately I had to dig up each bush and replant them. >u<
