How to play ACNL?

I know it sounds like a dumb question at first, but I really need help. How do you even play this game? I've been playing this game for 5 1/2 years but all across different towns I've given up. How do you even choose a layout? How do you decorate your town and house whilst making room for your fruit farms and hybrid farms? I've been in such a rut because I don't like starting off in real-time, but starting at a previous date and going day-by-day to there, and I can't keep a town for even a town-time week. What are the first steps I should do to help myself play the game?

Set small goals for yourself. If you try to figure out everything at once it came become overwhelming to act on it. Having something general in mind will help though. Almost any layout can be workable if you plan around the issue to your liking.

I like to tackle one goal at a time and go hard on it. Dressing my characters is relatively easy, there's lots of QRs out there. The next step would be their interior. Even thou I order furniture for rooms I don't have yet, I focus on one room at a time until it's atleast 90% finished, then I can move in to my next room, if I got it yet. Over time I'll tweek small details to my liking. Once I got the house the way I like it, or get in a rut, I'll landscape the outside area.

In Treehut, because I've accomplished most of the above mentioned, I'm focusing in the landscaping around the pathwork, then branching out from that. But you don't have to do the goals I said in that order. I think people like to landscape the town first, then focus in their houses.
