To be honest, like many here I like to think I keep my villagers happy by just doing what they want. Unless they want to buy, say, a shark of me... That's a little bit too big for their house, I think :p

I know they are just pixels, but I like to pretend they are not just Barbies for me to do what I want with them, so I like them to have their own say in decorating their house with gifts. It helps me immersed in the game and think of them as 'real people', I suppose.

I gladly addopt unoriginal villagers as well. If I don't like something in their house it isn't that difficult to just gift them other stuff. And it reminds me of the time I adopted Deirdre from a very kind cycler here on the forum: she had an unoriginal Deirdre already in her town, but she said she could do the whole process of moving her out and Amiiboing an original Deirdre in just for me. I was astonished people would request something like that, since it would take so much extra time to do something like that! I would not have dreamed of still requesting an original Deirdre in that case.

Edit: it kind of sucks though that I changed Bucks catchphrase and now it's the catchphrase of many other villagers in my town. I only gave him the catchphrase because it was a pun on him being a horse in combination with his original catchphrase 'pardner' (I made it 'paardner' because horse in Dutch is 'paard'... Lame, but I thought it was funny if Buck said it.. not so much when Aurora now has started saying the same thing).

for me this is a bit of a 2-fold question since im trying to get every villager's picture so im answering this from 2 perspectives.

for the villagers im just inviting to get their picture, i dont think id be comfortable giving them random clothing & items like bugs and fish because im eventually going to let the villager go for adoption, & id want the person to get them to be the one to make the choices on how they dress their villager and such. because of that ive been giving them wrapped non-native fruit as gifts (until i get the recipes for the wall lamp and terrarium, and a lot of materials for those).

for my dreamies, i would like to just find them naturally out in the wild u know, but i wouldnt be opposed to adopting them from someone else. i'd prefer if they were as close to the original as possible (at least no new clothes) but depending on which villager it is and how often they're put up for adoption i may make exceptions. when the dreamies r actually living in my town, i'll probably change their catchphrases & greetings whenever they ask, but i dont think i'll let them have every piece of clothing, furniture, or creature they ask for. since im going to do any delivery a villager asks of me, i'd like to at least limit the amount of random stuff they get lol. in my previous save before my current one, someone asked me to deliver a gift to Sydney and it was the steampunk outfit; i was so devastated.

I don’t mind giving them what they want, I think I feel worse saying no to them than seeing some ugly fish at their house, lol. I think that you can make them stop saying changed frases if you talk to Isabelle, But I’m not completely sure.

I'm not very strict at all, if anything, I would do anything that would make them feel satisfied or happy. I get why some people want to keep everything "original" for their villagers, but I prefer not to take that approach since I feel like I'm restricting my ability to interact with them. If they request me to deliver gifts or catch certain fish/bugs for them, I certainly just do it for them right away. Regarding furniture, I always gift them items that I feel would match their interior. Clothing is the same as well, where I prefer to gift clothes which I think matches their appearance.

Perhaps I'm just too much for push over and I simply can't say no. But realistically, with the villagers I have, I don't intend on giving them away, so it's not a concern to me whether or not they stay "original" since they're there for my enjoyment, and I'm not anticipating someone else to take them from me. :)

I feel like my answers to these questions have changed a lot over time. At the beginning, I wasn't very picky about what I gave my villagers--pickings were slim and if I had to make do with whatever was on hand, so could they. These days, I've got tons of resources and I've gotten very picky about what I give the villagers. Picking out gifts is one of my main activities in the game most days and if i don't have anything really good, I give fruit.

I've got some reshuffling going on--I recently invited Francine to my island and I found myself thinking that her style and home decor are so different from my other villagers, the new gifting possibilities were really refreshing. I'm going to be moving out my much-loved cranky Boris in favor of Roscoe & it was always so much fun to dress Boris because he could pull off almost anything but it was really, really hard to give him furniture because he lives in an Egyptian temple (very similar to Ankha). Roscoe will have a more limited range of clothing options and a wider range of furniture.

I recently gave Marshal a billiard table thinking that maaaybe if I was lucky he'd place it in that empty corner to the right of his door and he DID. I was STUNNED. But now I'm afraid to give him anything else because I don't want him to move the billiard table. Meanwhile I've given Klaus SO MANY GIFTS trying to make him get rid of his toilet and nope, it will not budge.

My lovelies Lucky, Lobo, and Dobie still haven't arrived to my island but I won't limit them when they do. I like to keep a natural flow of things - unless one of these three asked to move out. That's the only time I'll intervene 😅

I'll give them clothes and furniture I think they'd enjoy and help them with a new catchphrase if they want to change it up.

Not against adopting but haven't been active with the villager trading scene (yet)!

Clothes easily bother me. Tabby has a Sari and an Instant-muscles Suit (I hate hate hate that thing!) because I have a hard time saying no if someone wants me to deliver packages, but I really wish she wouldn't own and wear these things. I learnt that lesson the hard way. I'm particular about clothes in the sense that I only want them to wear what I picked out for them, but I do love to gift them stuff that I think looks great on them. I think that clothes can give them way more individuality.
Two out of my three adopted villagers came with clothes. Annalisa and Olaf both have custom designs (I think?), Annalisa's is just a black shirt and therefore not too irritating, but I don't like Olaf's. Luckily he hasn't worn it in a while, but that alone wouldn't be a reason to get rid of him.
Furniture doesn't bother me at all. I want to give them at least some freedom and since they are not allowed to pick out their own wardrobe, I let them do to they interior whatever makes them happy, no matter whether or not I like it.
Catchphrase-wise, I prefer them saying some variant of "doll" over their original ones. It is a bit annoying however since every bit of dialogue among them seems to be about catchphrases now and whenever someone comes running up to me, they almost always want to talk about catchphrases. I think it was yesterday that I was asked three times whether or not a catchphrase was fine, twice by Groucho.

I am very strict. I regulate what they eat, how much exercise they get every day. They must obey the mandatory 1hour of singing and 30 minutes of Naruto running a day. No more! No less! They must all wear black body suits. No one is allowed diversity. One day a villager tried to wear a blue body suit. We don't talk about that villager anymore. We don't see that villager anymore.

Yes, 100% obedience in this village. Muahahahah!

;P

JK, I don't restrict my villager in anyone. Anyone expecting a 100% from my villagers. Good luck! Some are but some... may say anything. I mean if I ever let Ankha leave (I have her amiibo so I can get her back any time). Well, they might just have her call them Mistress and Plaything now and then.

WHAT!? That's exactly something Ankha would say. Honestly tell me you could not see Ankha referring to you or anyone as a plaything. The Queen is always right. ;P

@Rubombee - Love your Signature. I ship that. ;P

@ThatOneMarshalFangirl - Love your Signature. Those two are 100% the best of friends.

No fish/insects or custom designs, only small furniture items that don't replace anything important, and very few to no clothes.

Once I have my dreamies, I have no issues giving them clothes/furniture, but I'm specific about which ones I give! I want it to match them well :) I try to avoid fish/bugs.
I will occasionally buy an unoriginal villager, but I try to avoid it. Flora was unoriginal when I got her, and had the most hideous orange comedian suit. Thankfully she asked me to buy it off of her so now she no longer has it!

now that i’ve had my same villagers for quite a while and plan on keeping at least most of them, i’ve been primarily gifting them clothes that match them and also furniture that i think they would like or would look cute in their house. i never ever change their catchphrases or greetings though because i don’t want them to pass on to other villagers.

i actually love when villagers wear my custom designs and i get so so excited to see one on them!! but all my villagers and all my designs are pretty cutesy so they never feel out of place on them.

All of the above except "I don't limit my dreamies". I mean, sure it sounds boring but this is for their own good, I guess haha. I don't want visitors or people (when DA is unlocked) laughing at their interiors when they visit my island and go inside their homes

If they are my dreamies, that means I plan on keeping them forever so I will go wild LOL. I would give them clothes that I think will look nice on them, do quests for them, do deliveries for them, and the whole shabang boom pow :x The only thing I won't do is sell them bugs or fishes ,but if they request I go catch one for them, then yes XD
The only time where I don't do any of these things is when I don't plan on keeping a villager since people seem to appreciate original villagers more haha.

Only reason I don't post in Able Sister's is because I haven't made custom designs myself since I suck at drawing on the switch.

i give my villagers a couple of items here and there if i deem that they fit their aesthetic. wouldn't give them anything outrageous or stupid bc i feel like i'd hate myself for it after if i have to deal with seeing the item again LMAO. i definitely do requests for them when they ask for fish/insects (unless im too busy and just wanted to chat to them).

I give them furniture and clothes all the time but I try to make it fit the theme somewhat. I'm still guilty of giving them fish and bugs though. I actually chose "I don't limit my dreamie at all" but I also haven't displayed any custom designs so I picked that one as well.

I don’t limit them at all, I did in NL with the furniture, but not anymore since villagers don’t change their interior that much anymore.

I started to care about the interior of my villagers' houses looking decent in New Leaf after I totally wrecked my original Drago's house with a bunch of random junk that didn't go well together (I proceeded to move him out of the town he was in and go his amiibo to move a fresh one into another town).

As such, I don't give villagers fish or insects that they request, they practically always make the house look worse.

I'll sometimes give them furniture if I think it would look good in their house.

I'll run deliveries for them, but admittedly I do it with some hesitance.

As for clothing, whether actual clothes or custom designs, I haven't personally given any to any of my residents in New Horizons so far. Snake got a delivery from Bella and the item was a shirt. Even though I plan to replace Snake with a dream villager, since Snake was only a starting villager who I never intended to keep, I told him to keep his original clothes instead because they looked better. I feel like the clothing is a real case-by-case basis sort of thing. I can see myself giving certain villagers certain clothes I think would look good on them, but yeah, just haven't yet. I am nonetheless somewhat hesitant about this too, because if they decide to just display their old clothes (or the new ones) in their house, that's no good, because unlike New Leaf it doesn't seem that I could just buy it back from them later.

Catchphrases are the thing I'm least strict about, but I'm still a bit strict with it nonetheless. I'll give my residents catchphrases that I think would fit them individually and don't mind replacing their original ones, because I could always just change it back later. I will definitely give Isabelle a visit and complain if it's a catchphrase that only works for one particular villager if it has spread to other residents (in my case, a permanent villager, Annalisa, keeps wanting to use non-permanent villager Snake's catchphrase of colonel, which is a Metal Gear Solid reference.)

As far as the bonus option on the poll goes regarding only adopting villagers who retain 100% originality, this more or less applies. In New Horizons, I decided to get amiibo for most of the permanent villagers because of the glitch going on in the early days when you'd adopt villagers from other people. In New Leaf, I definitely strived to adopt from shops who would try to ensure mint condition.

I guess I'm fairly uptight about my villagers, but eh, everyone has their own comfort zone.

i do love the villagers' original interiors, but the only thing i try not to give them is tacky furniture (no cardboard boxes for you, audie!) or any sharks because they just look so out of place! i don't really care about keeping them perfect and original, i plan on keeping the dreamies i have so i don't want to keep them like robot prisoners forever LOL i do applaud the people who do though!

i’m strict but not super strict. the main things i’m concerned with are trying to keep their clothes original and their catchphrases original - i’ll give them bugs/fish if they ask for it and i’ll gladly complete delivery quests for them but i personally don’t like to be the one to change things for them. if they wanna change things on their own or with the help of another villager, i don’t really care as long as i’m planning to keep them ;u;
