I didn't because I was new to the game and didn't even know resetting was a thing. But I got lucky with my map. I would have if I has know at the time that I couldn't change RS placement

Upon release I only resetted for Apples/Blue airport, but I always knew this would not be my permanent island. So earlier this month I did reset 3-5 hours daily for about 3 weeks straight once I found out what I desired in a map after testing the waters in my first playthrough. My experiences/reasons for resetting/things I found out I needed;
  • A clean slate - No more time travel in order to enjoy the full experience, not get burned out fast & not 'mess up' my Nook Miles achievement's dates.
  • Rock formations turned out to be quite important for me. They need to be large in size for both the top edges of the beach & the rocks on the beaches, preferably distributed equally so the beaches are partitioned off in similar smaller beaches.
  • I prefer the beaches to be rounded & broad, the majority of the maps have either very narrow parts or dents in them that do not feel natural to me.
  • The biggest possible peninsula & dock in order to always have the most possibilities.
  • I lost overview of all DIY recipes/furniture/clothing items I got my hands, so I downloaded an app on my phone to track all possible collectibles.
  • Placement of RS on Island Map - I need it to somehow align in a mid part of the grid.
  • Placement of secret beach needs to be in the middle.
Resetting was hell, but I know it was necessary in order for me to create an enjoyable island for possibly years to come.

Truth be said, a perfect map is a hard find. There's always something that could be even better, so I did eventually settle with pears in stead of apples, but other than that everything else is a solid 10/10 for me. The apples turned out to be my sister fruit & I must say the pears might've become my favorite native fruit because of this entire resetting process, and the pear furniture is easily my favorite of all fruit furniture.

Good luck to all resetting for that perfect map!

I'm surprised by the results but interesting varied experiences from everyone!

My town is the original map I picked! I got lucky and actually really ended up enjoying my island layout. Thankful for the terraforming feature still, as I wanted to move some ponds around. :')

Pears are super underrated, the trees look beautiful in Autumn.

lol maybe 2-3 hours? I got the game only this month so my best friend, who had been playing since release, told me about stuff in advance. Like how the airport and RS couldn't be terraformed, and that she hated how freaking close her RS was to the airport. I kind of planned to reset anyway since I was going off of NL experience.
In general, I wanted an island with peaches for native fruit and the RS a great distance from the airport. I also wanted decent starters (like I kept getting Diva for uchi or gorillas for jock ugh). I didn't know about the airport colors before, and I'm actually pleased I got a green airport! It has that black streetlamp I needed a heckin ton of.

I didn’t! This is my first AC game so when the 4 maps came up I just chose the one I liked best and went with it. I chose one with double south river exits, 3 cliff top waterfalls and a heart shaped pond. I’m sure it wouldn’t be everyone’s choice of island but my island has been kept quite natural feeling and I love it.

The only thing I would change is my airport colour which is that terrible brown/orange colour. I would have loved blue or green but it’s not worth resetting for!

On my first island, I didn't reset for an island layout cos I didn't really pay attention to how that would affect my playthrough, but I did reset for pears! Took I think 5 goes? I also reset for apples on my boyfriend's island when he had to run an errand which took 20+ which was super unlucky ahaha.
On my second island, on my second switch, I reset for a good layout but I really think it's hindered my creativity as I don't wanna change anything because it's so perfect! The first one, when I realised I didn't like the layout I had so many ideas (eek yet to be put into practice, but hey) as I wanted to change it all, the only thing I still don't like is the resident services placement, but that's just how it is.

I used to have a town layout I hated in New Leaf, so I thought I'd have to reset to get a good one this time. I reset maybe 3 times until I realized I had no idea what I was looking for. I settled on one where there are symmetric river mouths and town square lined up with the airport because yeah I guess it looks nice on the minimap.
Turned out I don't like it that much lol but it's okay. With terraforming, these things are really not that big of a deal anymore.

I reset for around 4 hours. I wanted RS to be as North as possible, and close to the side beach. Then saw one map that had RS so far out to the right that I then reset only targetting that particular map until it had Apples or Cherries.

Glad I did as I raised almost my entire town onto the first layer cliff so RS being out of the way helped a lot! Though I later found how varied the rock formations can be at the north of town and wish I had some that could be decorated. Also thought my outcrop of land over the sea would be able to hold a villager house, but it's a half tile too small. But I couldn't have known that at the time so I don't really mind.

I'm surprised at how many people didn't reset at all! I reset probably about 12-15 times, I really wanted to start the game and found a map I was quite happy with. I was mainly just looking for a variety of beach rocks (I wanted at least 2 or 3 that I could walk out on), south-facing rivers, for the grass peninsula to be one of the wider shapes, and for my resident services to be the farthest north I could get it to be. In the end I sacrificed how far north my resident services was because I really loved rocks on the map I ended up choosing, plus it hit all my other desires. I still sort of regret my RS being so close to my Dodo Airport, but not enough for me to reset my island completely!

Things like my town fruit (I've gotten pears the last 2 AC games and this one was fated to be no different), Dodo Airport color and starting villagers I left up to fate. :) I was pretty impartial to all of my options for those though!

I'm happy with my island and I had no resets. Ok maybe other fruit would've been fine but mehhh... got all fruit now so I don't care haha

Ya know, I was going to reset a whole ton...but I got a jock who’s one of my favorites, a sisterly that fits perfectly into my theming, the airport color I needed, a centered secret beach and a feature that means I need to do less terraforming. So, while not everything is PERFECT (pears are a meh native fruit and cosmos are boring), I LOVE how it turned out.

With my shared island, it took a bit longer but I was going for a specific fruit-airport combo.

I did not reset for a specific map. I chose the map that had a mini island from the start. It's hard to tell when there was not much information of this game when it was released. For example, I did not know that the airport color would be tied to certain color ways of nook mile items, the various rock formations on the beach, and shapes of the peninsulas. If I knew about these factors I probably would have been resetting for these factors. Otherwise, I am content with working around with the current state of my island today.

It didn’t cross my mind that we could reset, but I’m pretty happy with the island I got! Red airport (I like the colors we get from the nooklings), apples as my native fruit, lilies as my native flower (wish I got cosmos but lilies are pretty and fit my island theme), a mini land peninsula thing (kind of like a very small island), and two large rock formations! I hate that my resident services is like.... one block off from being right at the middle part of my island; the bridge I placed behind it (and in the middle of the island obviously) looks a bit off but I don’t mind all that much!

I don't care much for flowers and fruit but somehow forgot to check which features could vary. Picked one of the first 4 and now I have a yellow airport, by far my least favourite colour... Oh well, too late to change that now.

My first island I reset until I got a blue airport and peaches. Those were the only two things I knew I could influence by resetting. It took maybe an hour or two. Well I ended up scrapping that island, I had no connection to it despite it being my first. Since I had tossed out 300+ hrs of progress I decided to go hard and find that new island with everything I wanted.

It took many resets, I'm talking hours. I wanted an orange airport with hyacinths, apples, decent sized pier, wide area of land that sticks out into the ocean near the resident services for a lighthouse and a resident services (preferably to far left or right) that wasn't close to the airport. A few hours in I was starting to think about settling. There was no way I would find everything I wanted, right? Then there it was... my perfect island. I recall screaming when I realized it had everything I was looking for

It made it all worth it!

I didn't reset. It didn't occur to me. I just picked the best looking of the four that appeared. I didn't know about the different airport colours or anything at the time but I ended up with blue so I'm quite happy. I always get cherries in Animal Crossing games and this time was no different.

If I ever get another switch and start a second island I'll probably spend ages getting the right one!
