How likely is it to get a void villager?

I have 9 villagers in one of my towns. However, I want to landscape my town so I was just going to find someone to buy hybrids and other landscaping items. But I really don't want a void villager moving in. How likely would it be for a villager to move in from someone's void? It's never happened to me before and, even though I doubt it, is there a way you can prevent void villagers? Or should I just take my chances?

Even if someone comes to your town for a few seconds and doesn't talk to anyone, you have a chance of getting an unwanted villager. The same is true if you take a quick trip to another town. The only way to avoid picking up someone is to stop all visits and don't Streetpass. That's what I do when I have less than 10 villagers.

^^ This. Any wifi activity with less than 10 villagers & you run the risk. I don't wifi with less than 10 villagers for just that reason. I'm super picky about who moves into my town & I don't want some castoff villager.

You always have that chance as long as you have an open spot in your town. What I usually do is switch off StreetPass and wait to have a full town until I use wifi features again. The most you can do is ask to trade only with people who don't have any villagers in their void but it's risky, since they can lie or forget. Can't you get a 10th villager?

Yah your best bet is getting at 10th villager before proceeding with any wifi trades

I just take the risk and stay on the same day to invite a new villager in. I go through them quickly.

I always avoid trading when I have less than 10 villagers,
and I just played without wifi on just to be sure.

I hadn't realised before joining this site that you can even get a voided villager by visiting another town
I'm really paranoid about this sort of thing, when I get to 8 or 9 villagers I won't even let my son visit my town or go to visit his.
The only guaranteed way is to turn off streetpass and avoid trading until you get back up to 10 villagers. Which is what I'd do to be honest
