How do you have multiple paths at the same time?

How do people have a path in their town, then have a more designs on the ground without it changing?
Ok, how to explain this...
I have 10 spaces in my design tab.
I am using all of them for paths.
I want to make a water path also.
How do I keep the path on the ground without it changing when I trade a water path for a path in my design tab? Whenever I do that, the design changes.

Make a new character and put the paths on that one

By creating a second character. That's seriously the only way.

yeah it's irritating, but notice if you go to really nice dreamtowns with lots of customization both in their house QR, QR outfits and QR paths, they have 3-4 characters.

just keep your 4th slot open if you plan on doing the reset trick.
