For me, often times I get inspired by another person's room theme and make it different using the same concept. For instance, the private library on my top floor (I had to make a new character to take a picture):

I know in this one there are striking similarities, but I take into account what is obvious and widely used and discard it as being original to that specific person. For example, the library books being stacked in the back is a commonly used idea. Other times I just think of a specific room theme, browse through my catalog and see if there is furniture that can help match that room theme.

I'm kind of weird and I really like interior decor. I watch a lot of house renovation shows...But I typically get ideas from things I see in everyday life or if I see a piece of furniture that I happen to really like. I might also get ideas from other games, villager houses or movies. Just depends. My creative function is always running.

I really like both the original room and the room you've created!
I'm not very creative in terms of my rooms, I usually just plop a cohesive set together and add plants lol.

I take ideas from everywhere XD, I google interior design, I visit Dream Address but sadly I only have 2 rooms actually completed, well not even the 2nd room ;n; I try to put many ideas into one big idea so I dont feel like my room looks too similar to someone else room.
This is my cafe area thing.

Edit: to people that like matching themes,HAHA my room might trigger someone for mismatching XD

Ooh, cozy!

I just think of mine myself. I look through furnitures and sets and see what I like. Sometimes I'll combine certain sets.

I take ideas from real life! I either look at rooms at my school as far as furniture goes (M building has awesome furniture, no lie!) or I'll google room decorating ideas...which I do for ideas for my own real life bedroom anyways.

I think of what I would want a real town/house to look like and put those ideas into Animal Crossing.

I always think of fun themes that you don't usually see. I recently made a rubber ducky bathroom and a super Man bed room. Or I think of a cartoon or nursury rhyme I really liked as a kid.

I visit dream towns and sometimes google for ACNL pics for a furniture set I may use to get some inspiration, and I try to do something with the furniture sets I like.

I love reading home decorating magazines and I follow a lot of purely aesthetic blogs. My bathroom and guest room are fantasy versions of things I saw in HGTV magazine. My main room is kind of decorated to look like my parent's house, but I'm getting tired of the color scheme. I just haven't found what I want to do yet.

Most of the time it's either something that's been inspired by someone else's town/house, or I just like a set and want to do something with it. :)

Might try some of these other ideas though~

I feel I'm probably weird in that I always feed a constant stream of items to Cyrus, and whenever something comes out looking pretty nice I'll make a room around it.

Like, in my first town at the start of the game I got a 2 lamp, and coloured it yellow and thought it looked passably like a duck. And then made a kids animal theme room with a rainbow of 2 lamps swimming along my back wall. :p And then when I was playing with the polka series (looking for a colour scheme for the kids room actually) I ended up with a polka clock that looked like a watermelon, and then made an entire watermelon room. xD

My Mayor's house is just all over the place, really. I have one fancypants regal/rococo room, one that's full of candy and sweets, one that's stuffed with rainbowy-pinky stuff, one housing my princess set, a flower/garden room and the basement is, for the moment, still just storage. But what usually helps is I'll find an item or two that I adore, and decide "this NEEDS to be in my house - how do I complement it?" and then I "build" based around that item, or whatever.

With my side-characters (who are not-so-secretly pattern/storage mules, shhhh don't tell them!), they're ports of D&D characters I've built but never had the chance to fully realize or just loved too much to let go. In both their cases, it's much easier to figure out what I want their homes to look like, and what to do with certain rooms.

One is a fairly eccentric doctor with a love of all things cute, for example, and due to backstory and things that happened during his campaign, it was established that he came from a poorer area and ran a not-so-legal clinic. Also, super into eldritch gods. So I think - what would he do with all that space, if he finally had it? He'd carry on with his practice, so that's one room for his hospital-y stuff, TWO rooms if the main one is treated as a separate waiting/reception area. Then he'll have his standard kitchen and bathroom. The bedroom will be where all his cute stuff goes, and the basement is going to be where all his freaky **** goes. Makes sense for his character, even though it's probably weird someone out if they were just passing through and decided to check out his house (once I finish it... T_T)

Second is a lass who's worked as part of a merchant caravan (alongside khajiit characters, in the game she came from :P) so I draw from typical merchant stuff - there'll be rooms full of vases and antiques and the like. Then there'll be a place for seedier activities like gambling. Maybe a place where she'll display her own collection of instruments and swords and other stuff she's taken a liking to. Not sure what to do with her decor yet, since there's a lack of distinctly indian/arabian/etc influenced stuff up in this game, so I imagine I'll spend the most time sorting out how to organize all her stuff.

Once I have a general idea to work with, I pile ALL THE FURNITURE into the room. Like, just shove it all into a corner. And then I start pulling things out to where I think they might look good... it all goes from there.

...hey, you asked.

I just pick a theme and put together whatever works. My rooms turned out pretty nice/original that way. I don't really like having rooms filled to the point where it looks cluttered though.

My two towns were both inspired by different things, my first town I got major inspiration from a town I always see on tumblr called Kokoro, it's a beautiful pink town, but I am going to do pink, purple, red and white, like valentines day. But my houses are all different town building themed, I have a pink girly mayor house with rooms that someone would have in their house(kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, kids room, etc.), a school house with different classrooms, a "haunted" house with lots of antiques and spooky stuff like a bookcase maze!

I get tons of inspiration from peoples pictures on tumblr and interior design in general, I honestly put more thought into my rooms than I should, I mean I have actual physical blue-prints drawn out for what I want to do once I get each of my four houses upgraded all the way.

I don't think it's bad to copy a design you like a lot, I copied the layout of my kitchen from a picture I saw because it fit the room so perfectly, the things on the counters and "buffet" are going to be different and I used different flooring and things to tweak it to my tastes, but I don't think it's a bad idea at all, I have seen people who have built their actual houses in real life, well to an extent, unless you have a weird T shaped house in real life I'm sure it's not the same all the way, but that's a really good thing to take inspiration from. (If I copied my IRL room there wouldn't be space to walk ehehehe)

That is so CUTE! I always like the bug/fish rooms, I had a mermaid and fish room (using all the fish-tourney furniture), I love the idea of the tree cutouts!

I just go with the flow and when I get an Idea I just go with it, like how in my back room I have feng shui or whatever it's called to get HHA points which moves my kitchen to my basement and my bathroom is in the right room, my bathroom is the only room with refurbished furniture (Claw foot tub, bath tub, flower table, flower lamp and other things) They're all refurbished marble colors or white or a light blue. I also have two Capricorn ornament on both sides of my bath room, merlion and palace wall and a marble floor, forgot what it's called I also have a deer scare in there so it sounds relaxing. At my left room is the alpine set with all my villager pictures :D and the top floor is my princess set with wedding cakes next to kid cat and lolly's pic, flower bouquet next to sky and fang's pic and a sapphire and silver on both sides of the couch. I also have capricorn ornaments on both sides of the princess bed and at the foot of the bed it the white rococo dresser which is the same color of the capricorn ornament to it matches, I love that room, so symmetrical and peaceful. Lastly my main room is the gorgeous set with card pieces, man I crammed a lot in that room. At the bottom of the room I hung green clocks on the south wall for feng shui and no one can see it, brilliant I should do that with all my walls! All the rooms with the sets has all the pieces! It makes me really happy when lyle is all like your regular score is supposed to be 100k and go for the highest 150k and my score is 300k! ( I didn't fully upgraded my house yet for the theme bonus.)
