It's a mixed bag for me. I go on the subreddit to mostly look at memes but will occasionally come across an idea that I like and think makes sense to implement on my island. Usually, though, I just get random sparks of inspiration that may or may not turn out nice. XD

For island design, I find decorating villager yards to be fairly easy because there are multiple reference points (e.g. their preferred colours, style, hobby, and/or goal), whereas I usually get stuck on how to fill in small sections of the island here and there.

I usually come up with the sort of space I would like to make (tea party, honey farm, picnic area, etc) and then I search up inspiration (usually on google images haha) for ideas on what kind of items I can use because I'm not familiar with everything in the game. then I usually order things or trade for new items if I don't already have them and then just spend some time playing around with how things are laid out and what looks good in the space, with things like terraforming I haven't done anything huge since I really set out the main rivers/cliffs on my island so usually it's just figuring out little decorations or small water features that will fit into a certain space as well as moving trees around or putting bushes/flowers etc.

Most of my island decorating is stuff I did without any external frame of reference, but I've found some dream islands that inspire me. For example, I'm starting to use more bushes everywhere because I saw in several dreams how lush and beautiful they make everything look.

YouTube, Pinterest and Twitter mostly but of course they’re just inspirations because I just don’t have that much creativity plus I don’t think I can play in a very much decorated island. So I tweak it to fit my playstyle more. Sometimes I just get ideas out of nowhere. Very randomly. Lol.

Everything on my island is from my own inspiration. I feel if I borrow too much from other players it means nothing is original and hinders innovation. I am always terraforming and thinking of newer, fresher ideas to best complement the themes that I am running.

Most of the stuff I come up with was inspired by my own ideas. Sometimes I might go and see how others might had done the same thing, but sometimes my idea is so out of there that it's not really easy to find on a search. (Or currently with the current content) If I see something I think is cool, I will implement it in my own design, but I don't like the idea of just copy/pasting other works verbatim. Like I want to challenge myself. I'm not doing it for the views and more for myself, so if my idea falls or not is a chance I'm willing to take.

Watching speed build videos helps a lot. It makes the whole process of building something less intimidating in my opinion.

I feel like if they just reworked how terraforming worked in some future QoL update it'd be less daunting of a task. There is nothing worst than terraforming a good chunk of land, not liking it, and having to waste time undoing it all.

This-also, I keep a list of ideas I see that I like so if I find myself stumped with a blank area I can go through the list.
