"officially", based on the tbt marketplace's info blurb, it's 'tbt bells' in full, but the bells part just gets dropped, as it's usually pretty easy to tell the forum currency and forum itself apart in context

so I guess based off of this, the full actual abbreviation should be tbtb, but I've never once heard tbt called as that (while I do know some people use btb typically)

Makes sense. I figured it was this too, it's just something that I always found kind of interesting. Personally I don't think I've ever seen someone write it as BTB.

Not suggesting we need to change it or anything. It's much too late for that now and everyone knows what this means anyway. :P

not necessarily, I TT'ed to get all my gulliver stuff and honestly it took me days! As far as I was aware all duping glitches had been patched except the one where you use a second character and go to their island but seriously are people that desperate to con people out of their hard earned bells/NMT? I use TBT primarily for collectibles, if there is something I really want in game I will use my TBT for that.

To my knowledge, the auto-saving duping glitch is still around and will always be a round as long as auto-saving is a thing. Even if that isn't the case, people are crafty and new glitches are often discovered. There's always the possibility of hacking as well.

Not saying that anyone in the Nook's Cranny forum is doing any of that (as that is strictly prohibited re: forum rules!). I do believe that most folks are time travelling for it. Just that it is a possibility. The other possibility is that people can purchase items on other sites and then sell them here.

I’ve often thought about buying things on nookazon as I am looking to make tbt but the site is very slow at times to make a sale go ahead so instead I just TT a day at a time in the hope of finding redd/Gulliver/gullivarr/flick/c.j. as their items are most profitable for sure.

I like TBT's personally. I feel that as someone who has played the game from release I have a load of IGB and NMT's they don't have any 'value' to me. Where as TBT's I see as more valuable to me. That said I use them mainly to commission artwork and occassionally in trades for villagers because lets face it who has time to mash on the buttons to get 100's of NMT in payment. I'd say TBT's definately had a positive effect for me!

I am having mixed feelings with it, honestly.

I voted for "mild negative." Like everyone else, I don't mind it being the main trading currency. It's stable. It's not prone to abuses. You can easily earn by posting in this forum. However, it also discourages other forms of payment. I prefer diversity that allows trading to any form of currency.

Nowadays, I hardly see Bells being used. Nook Miles ticket still has some leftover value because of Raymond and Judy being exclusive. I do understand why some shops would prefer to receive that as payment because of the collectibles and other features.

Lastly, I know that having that currency encourages people to participate here and mingle. But not everyone likes to do that.

It isn't finite. You earn it just by being active and posting. I've always thought it was a good currency. I can spend it without losing anything in game. To people who don't care about collectibles on the forum, it is currency they can use that they wouldn't otherwise have use for and give it to people who do. I don't really see a downside except some stuff being overpriced but that's not unique to tbt as a currency.

i agree. this is my exact same answer. I can spend it without losing anything in game.
other websites--nookazon, reddit, twitter, discord... they don't have other currency. it's either nmt's or bells as payment. so i feel like, when the time comes, it's better to save those bells & nmt's.
personally, i don't care for bells anymore. in terms of payment, if they are paying me, sure it's ok give me bells. but i rarely offer bells myself because i'd lose it in game & i would rather spend it on those expensive furniture or pay for moving buildings and stuff. it's also easy to get tbt if you're active on the forums, and as you said it being overpriced is not unique to tbt as a currency. if anything, overpriced bells or nmts feels like a much bigger spending.

this all depends on the person, though. so just glad we have choices. shops are generally negotiable too. unless they ask for specific payment for a reason (like nmts for villager hunting).

true. i feel like we can't just assume everyone hacks. if they are an active online trader/seller, i doubt they risk with hacking their switches. farming visiting NPC's is easier now, i've heard. because they appear on the same day if you don't tt the next week. some shops with unlimited supplies are questionable, but let's not attach a stigma around the whole trading community & other people are actually just being helpful.

like, i could even open a shop of my own if i have free time. i need to get rid of tons of repeats that's just overstocking my storage.

I prefer TBT as payment. I have the collectibles I want, so I'm just accumulating something I don't use. I've banked most, but what I have on hand is plenty to pay for items.

I'd rather get things on my own, but some variants are locked, so trading is the only answer. Since I don't TT, farming is slower, too.

If I can help someone out with their collectible quest and get something for my island, I think it's a win-win.

Since I'm an active poster here, might as well take advantage of the exclusive currency. And to re-iterate others, I can spend it without losing anything in game.

TBT has helped me lots with the game. It still does and I'm sure it will continue to do so. I was able to catalog and/or trade furniture I need, get most DIY, and get resources/materials easily. And I am VERY thankful to all the people and their shops here for making it possible.

I think it's great!

As @BalloonFight said above, it basically allows me to get stuff I value (artworks etc) in return for something I don't value (TBTs), without having to spend in-game currency which I also value and would rather hang on to.

Clearly there are some members who really want TBTs, so I'm happy to let them have as many as they want if they can help me with getting in-game items that I want.

I managed to finish my art gallery pretty much exclusively using TBTs that I earned naturally in the course of discussing the game on here. I'm not going to use them for anything else, so they may as well go to someone who wants them. If I had to part with NMTs or in-game bells, I might have struggled to justify the prices.

When the game first came out I avoided the forums like the plague, it sucks to log on and only see people wanting to trade for NMT's since they were so obtainable from the glitch. IGB had the exact same worth when it was New Leaf since turnips have always been around. I prefer to buy things with TBT solely because I need to use my IGB to buy things in the game like moving houses and stuff. Also I've been a member of the forums for awhile so I already had some

It's harder to get certain people (ie. new to the forums) to give you tbt now, as you always have to include a short explanation as to what it is, how you get it, etc. I think it was easier last month (before the most recent bell tree direct) since I could easily link someone to a source of 150 bells and ask for that in return, but hey.

As for me personally, I farm up all the items I sell via time-travelling and I'm generally quite upfront about that. I don't do massive offsite trades (I do occasionally buy an item or 2 off of the acnh discord, but usually for personal usage), which is how I know quite a few other people amass things to sell on here.

But then again, I probably have one of the smaller shops in NC so you might wanna ask someone else about that xD. I tend to ask TBT since I'm trying to save up for some collectibles, and I have stayed on this forum for longer than I've played ACNH so it has a bit more longevity to me personally.

I think TBT have had a good positive effect. Though I confess to not using it much myself, a few main reasons for this thinking:
- Discourages people with low IGB and NMT from using real money to get things. This is a viable free alternative!
- It's a great back-up pocket. I lost my data in ACNL to the corruption glitch, and was able to buy a good portion of things I lost back on here when I restarted.
- It's a far more stable market than either IGB or NMT, and easier to trade if you're the buyer. Especially at higher prices where things begin to take multiple trips!

I like being able to buy things with TBT because it spares my NMT stock for villager hunts and NM items! I don't have any TBT collectibles (i don't even know how to start lol) so I'd much rather spend the points I earn from being active and posting on items I'd otherwise not be able to get so quickly. I don't TT so essentially I'm paying for that service, for someone else to TT, they get TBT, and everyone is happy!

I've used TBT to buy quite a few villagers from cycling services, and have found them very useful for that. For someone like me, who enjoys posting on the forum but doesn't particularly care about collectibles or anything, having people who value TBT is very ideal! It's a currency that I don't really care to acquire but will happily spend when given the opportunity.

I find the process of trading in TBT a lot easier too, as I don't have to bother to mess around with my inventory or spend years purchasing NMT lol.

Even in new leaf tbt was the main value, so I don’t see much difference. The only reason the NMT became popular the first two months was because the tbt currency was disabled (so we couldn’t really use it).

I think it’s an ok currency. I much rather use tbt than my own IGB or NMT , it’s just the easiest currency to use.

I don’t really trade for collectibles and such, so I accumulate tbt and instead of letting them just sit there, it’s great to be able to use it as a currency to buy game items, villagers and bells.

We had a poll on it back in the early ACNL days and "TBT" was the abbreviation the community preferred. I refer to them as forum bells usually.

i have no interest in the collectible market, but because it exists i get access to things like catalog islands. i imagine these exist off of TBT for RLC payments, but i'm never gonna pay RLC for in-game items. risky and not how i wanna play. because folks want to grind for collectibles, i'm able to use TBT to mass catalog relatively easily (and use other services, etc etc). the market works great for me.

i also get how it could be a barrier to a new TBT member or a less active forum user. i racked up some TBT quick doing art comms, posting alone isn't enough if you're trying to get everything lol. i do think once you get in the swing of things and figure out where your market niche is that you'll be just fine. there will also always be a degree of challenge to things and there will always be users who rack up wild amounts of hours on both the forum and the game and can buy things easily while you're scrambling to pay for something small.

I am very grateful we have it as an option, very convenient for getting NMT. I like earning my in game bells myself, but NMT is another story.

I don't use TBT for anything personally but I know a lot of people do. It's an easy to earn currency and I honestly prefer the chance to use that right now over NMT or IGB. It means I can save those up to get what I want and still be able to buy from other players.

The currency has been nothing but positive for me. NMT is where I dislike it. Idk how some people came up with hundreds, even thousands. I've been able to trade tbt for nmt and then finally get some villagers I wanted. Tbt is super easy to earn, too. Mine has all come from posting over the years, as I dont sell things very often at all.
