Wow, you learn something new every day; I had no idea charging cradles existed. (Then again, I have a 3DS XL and it seems those cradles only come (*) with the normal 3DS?)
(*) As in; you don't have to buy them separately, I mean.
When I first got my 3DS I didn't realise the cradle could be separated from the charger and I found the cradle really irritating >.< Luckily, I figured it out soon enough.
Charger only, even when I had a normal DS. When at home, I my 3DS is plugged into the outlet on my lamp (it has one for convenient access). It sits on my case for it so the bottom won't get scratched, but on top so that I can easily play while I take a break from other things. If I'm playing for longer periods of time I unplug it for a while and move to wherever I feel like being.

Actually, now that I think about it, I had to buy the charger for my 3DS XL separately (good thing I had read that they weren't included). Still, I don't remember reading something about a cradle, though. I might actually have gotten that; seems quite handy!
I just use my wall charger. I bought a 3DS car charger about a year or so ago for a road trip, but still have yet to use it. I'm sure it'll come in handy someday... when I remember where I put it.
I only use the charger, but my sister has a cradle. But I've got a Hori TPU case on my 3DSXL, so it won't fit in the cradle. My sister does not and can use the cradle easily when at home (when going somewhere she only takes the charger).
I can see the benefits from the cradle. My old normal DSlite had an issue since once I dropped it while putting the in charger, it hit the ground the wrong way, so from that moment on something inside got shifted, and it would only charge if I put a tissue underneath the charger entry, so the charger would be angled with a bit of pressure so it could connect correctly <_<
Wouldn't have had that if I could just put it in a cradle.
it's probably a joke but i'm getting a laugh out of thinking about the two people who voted "i dont charge my 3ds" cause i'm just picturing someone who runs out of battery and is just like
"welp, we had a good run 3ds but i guess that's it" and abandons the games forever
