I asked this because the value of NMTs genuinely confuses me. Because their only practical function in-game is to be exchanged for island tours, which aren't inherently valuable themselves. Maybe you'll bump into a popular villager or a rare island but it's pretty unlikely and random.
So it's interesting how they seem to have become the prefered online currency and are worth like, 150k bells each (as someone mentioned here) when bells have a lot more use in the game itself
I have too many bells from my private turnip trading group so I always have a steady income without having to catch bugs or fish. I use NMT to buy items I want because almost everyone accepts NMTs and not everyone accepts bells.
