How did you get rich in NMT?

I asked this because the value of NMTs genuinely confuses me. Because their only practical function in-game is to be exchanged for island tours, which aren't inherently valuable themselves. Maybe you'll bump into a popular villager or a rare island but it's pretty unlikely and random.
So it's interesting how they seem to have become the prefered online currency and are worth like, 150k bells each (as someone mentioned here) when bells have a lot more use in the game itself

I have too many bells from my private turnip trading group so I always have a steady income without having to catch bugs or fish. I use NMT to buy items I want because almost everyone accepts NMTs and not everyone accepts bells.

or well, I have nearly 40. Mostly because aside the terraforming options+hairstyle unlocks I didn't really spend any miles, so I've just gotten them by doing the daily 2x nook mile goals every day.

I got mine partly from trades (bc it seems to be the only currency a majority of people are looking for rn), but mostly from selling art!
I sold art commissions for NMT on a pay-what-you-want basis, so I was surprised to see that a lot of people were offering high amounts for my art :'D my shop's closed atm bc I don't have a use for all these NMT lol (at least not until I get a villager to move out)

They are exclusively for island hopping. I wanted a whole bunch of chances to find Raymond, that's all.

I have over 10,000 nmts from letting people catalog my furniture sets from acnh discord. I basically leave my game on while I work and let 2-3 people in at a time. A very good way to make nmts while doing nothing.

For people who would like to get NMTs, I would invest the time to get 2-3 complete sets and let people catalog for a couple nmts.

Hey, sorry to jump in like this lol, but I also have a question for people with a lot of NMTs:

Would you guys say that you use most of them to island hop, to buy Nook Mile items or to trade online? Like, how do you usually spend them?

I really enjoy island hopping and don’t have all the villagers I want yet so when I find a villager I don’t want and others do, I cycle them out to get NMT for island hopping.

Trading! sold reneigh yesterday for 50 NMT, then did a closet clean out and said I was looking for NMT along with other stuff and that I wasn’t looking for IGB. I find that people are more likely to buy from a closet cleanout if you have images to show, it just makes it easier for someone to see what they want, or they may find something they didn’t know existed but want. Cuz you can have a list but you might not actually know what the items looks like and it’s just a hassle opening a tab to search it up, and you gotta be quick to post what you want too - before it gets dibs by someone else!
