How Close?

In my nit-picky quest for perfect villager placement in my town, I've been thinking a lot about making areas that villagers can't move into using Public Works Projects and the like. I want to use the limited 30 projects I have as efficiently as I can.

My question is, how close can a villager's home be to certain things?

Here's what I know for sure:

A villager's home can be:
-1 space from another villager's house on the left or right.
-1 space from a river or pond, on the left, right and behind.
-2 spaces from a Public Works Project on the left or right.
-1 space from the edge of the town map from behind.

Here's what I want to know:

How many spaces can a villager's home be to:
-a river or pond to the front.
-a villager's house to the front or behind.
-a PWP to the front or behind.
-a rock to the left, right, front or behind.
-a player's house from the left, right, front or behind.
-the edge of the town map from the left or right. (cliff going up)
-a cliff from the left, right or front. (cliff going down)

Thanks for reading, I appreciate any insight you might have!
Additionally, if you have any screenshots of villager's houses close to any of the above, I'd love to see them.

Hopefully this picture will help you out a bit. It shows the space requirements of houses, as well as pwps - the orange parts can touch, but not overlap, and it can be right against cliffs and rivers (I'll try to attach a photo of one of my villager's houses that does this to the river and wall)

I think I figured it out, but sorry for the crappy, low quality laptop photos (didin't have time to take proper screenshots)

Well this is amazing. Thank you! I'm starting to plan out how my town will look later and I'll do up something that will (hopefully) work quite well at keeping villagers out of certain areas.

PS is that a DecalGirl skin on your 3DS?

I just updated my Dream Address, where I've generally outlined my town around the edges and the things I plan to keep or can't change with a bright yellow path to show where the borders are and where houses can't be placed or built. Please feel free to check it if you're curious.

In my laying down of paths, I've found that the borders might not include corners, as Drago's house touches a pond like this:

houses.png

where the first image is the shape of the pond with its borders, then the second image is Drago's house with its borders, and the green where they meet is the overlap.

with that in mind, here's what I think the borders actually might be:

houses2.png

if this is the case, there is no overlap when they are placed near eachother, which seems logical.

now, whether or not that means all borders are like this, I can't say for sure, but it definitely is something interesting to think about.

it's sort of hard to see, but here's a screenshot of the overlap:

you can also visit my Dream Address to see it if you want!

Hmm, I just tested it out to be sure and I'm fairly certain it does include corners. I definitely know that a lamp pwp has the corners (it takes up a 3 x 3 space in total) so I used one to test it out. The flower pattern is where the house's outer space is, minus the top right corner. The stone path is the space the lamp takes up, and the tree is where the lamp itself would be. I asked Isabelle to build there, but she said no, because it's too close to a resident's home.

It's just different with rivers, ponds, and I think cliffs. The space around the pwp/house can touch the edge of whichever it is. Like.. If the edge of the water itself would be the extra space, if that makes sense? I can try to make a diagram thing to explain it. What'd you use to make the thing with the pond and Drago's house?

yeah, I'm seeing this the right way now. Whoops. Silly me. Thanks for pointing out my error!

Villager's houses can't be directly next to rocks, right?

updated map.png

Here, this is how close the houses can be side by side, up and down, and what I think the rock would be. I haven't confirmed it completely yet, but tomorrow I'll go look at some old towns of mine to check

edit: Oh, I've also got screenshots of two houses like the ones on the right in the photo, plus one on the edge of a cliff. I'll upload them in the morning as well

I outlined ACNLpics with a grid of default patterns on Day #01.

It was my way of planning where to allow villagers to be located. It's a town where I used the southern half (described by one forum member who reviewed it as an "island") for the human villagers.

It has worked out very well.

The villagers are not perfectly located. I had to be flexible. But there's some space between their houses as I, for the most part, had intended. And when one visits in a Dream, he/she can travel straight (north/south and east/west) without having to zig-zag and find strange interruptions in the overall flow.

This was very time-consuming. But I handled ACNLpics in this manner because it's a theme town in which the human houses are museums paying tribute to all the animal villagers of "Animal Crossing: New Leaf."

I wish you, russiancars, all the best with your town.

I have a villager house with one space between it and a rock. My daughter's town had one as well before the villager moved.

I took the time to look at ACNLpics about a week ago. I was very impressed with the overall feel and flow of the town. I'm extremely envious of the fruits of your efforts!!
Thanks for the good wishes, and I hope your future projects go well.

I want to say one of my villagers did this, as well. Maybe the game treats rocks the same way it treats the edges of rivers or cliffs? I'd love to see a screenshot if you're able to provide one.
(if this is true this solves ALL OF MY PROBLEMS)

I'm almost completely certain I've seen villager's houses one space from eachother. However, those villagers have since moved and I have no proof of this; I will perhaps go looking in dream towns for examples.
But, I could be wrong. My memory sometimes fails to serve its master.

Oops! Sorry. I just saw your reply. Here's a photo. I took it with my phone, so the quality is bad, but you should still be able to see the spacing. (I have no idea why it's sideways.)

Perfect. Lovely. You are a fantastic individual for showing me this.

So, taking this into account, the game treats rocks the same as it treats the sides edges of the town, rivers, ponds and cliffs. Thank the gods for that!
