I think they're 4 by 4, but I'm not 100% sure, I think you get 3 squares every direction for every upgrade.

it's 4x4 and it goes up by 2 each time to reach 8x8

Thank you all for verifying this! I need to set up a Room beforehand at the museum...but I didn’t want to build a new room until I knew I liked how the room would look....but I needed to know the squares to use.
