Homeschooling

I honestly don't see what;s so bad about public school, but then again, I go to one of the best public schools in the state, and the state in general has nice public schooling,

I don't get this. So you admit to being a product of the public education system? What happened to being, y'know... you?
hardly a product of the public school. I'm me. i'm just not the me i used to be, and thank god for that.

if i hadn't had that social aspect, i wouldn't have been social, ever. it's not so much what the school/learning did for me, because the school is/was crap. it's just my own personal experience, and how i feel i would be that way, if i had been in a private school as opposed to the public schools.

and i think i replied to this question a few pages ago, don't remember. eh.

tl;dr, i was a robot, private school would have fed my education, which would have stalled my social growth (keeping me in that rut), as compared to public school, which stalled my education in place of feeding my social growth.

i know it's BS once it leaves my own head, but it's my own personal view/experience/opinion. i didn't go to a private school, but you didn't go to a public school (from what i've read/remember reading in this thread, i haven't kept up with tbt the past two days). the only people who have any real/justifiable opinion are those who have done all three, or at least two. (Psychonaut has only done public)

oh god wall of text.

I've been doing Independent Study since September of last year. Started my Freshman year and I'm doing it my Sophomore year (Right now :V) It's pretty much like homeschooling, 'cept for the fact it is still tied to the high school I had started at, and you technically teach yourself and go in for help whenever you need it. Pretty good deal since my teacher is awesome and helps out whenever I come in.

The entire thing helped me get my math grade up, too. Went from being in sucky General Math (The high school placed me in there since they only had room in that class when I went for the month and a few days >_>) to Geometry, and rose my grade from a C to a A-.

I like this a lot better sine you get that one-on-one help and don't feel rushed. When I was in school and I needed help, you pretty much have a limited amount of time and a whole bunch of other students who need help, as well, put in front of you.

With this I'm also being offered the chance to graduate my Junior year with a high school diploma, not a GED. I just need to talk it over with my mom, since it's something I want to do.

As for homeschooling in general... I did it a bit in 3rd grade since my mom didn't want me to switch from one private school to another at the end of the year... I don't really remember it, though.

I can also relate to the crap you get about not having a social life. *censored.3.0* whoever says that. I have plenty of friends from my old private school and the public school I went to.

Although I understand where you are coming from, I don't agree on two main points.

1) Even though I've never attended public school, my opinion is still legitimate because I'm not invoking any personal experience and am simply pointing out the general pros and cons of all three education options.

2) Increased education has absolutely no relation to stalling of social growth. Likewise, increased socialization doesn't necessarily mean worse education. I don't understand why you feel there is an inherent connection between the two. If you're so dead-set on socializing as a homeschooler, there are many options ranging from homeschool groups to clubs to sports to bands. Some feel more contrived than others (most homeschool groups I've been to came off as "fake"), but at the end of the day, there's your socialization.

There comes a point where socialization @ public schools becomes too much of a good thing. In other words, after a certain line, you're not "learning" anything new about social situations and are simply socializing for the sake of socialization. If that's what floats your boat, cool -- but at that point I can understand why your education would take a hit. Sometimes there's very little point in socialization...and that's when, personally speaking, I'm done. I'm the kind of person who socializes when there's a reason..."hanging out" sometimes fits that mold, but sometimes it doesn't. There are some people who are just fun to be around with and do nothing with. Cool, I can understand that. But to be constantly surrounded by unnecessary social interaction? I hardly think that's necessary for sufficient social development.

The reason you see the stereotype of the pale, friendless homeschool kid is because there are cases like that. Just like there are cases of drug-addled public schoolers. But as you very well know, a stereotype can't be applied to everyone. However, the pros and cons of both are nevertheless not equal and don't "balance out". With homeschooling, you get a better (nowadays "accredited") and much more flexible education. With the internet, it's easy to network with others who have similar interests, and this networking is very easy to find on a local level. You are as social as you want to be. With public schooling, the education is markedly worse and your social interactions are forced. Whether they have any merit or not is an entirely different story...

Edit - Also, for what it's worth, I'd just like to point out (again) that I feel there were absolutely no social hurdles in my transition from homeschooling --> college. There was a bit of a "learning curve" as far as the classroom environment, but I've only had one person tell me that they could tell I was homeschooled. How?

"You're pretty opinionated, most kids I met at my school didn't have any opinion on anything at all..."

Lexi, I know what you mean, at my school, people don't know what adjetives are, I learned about that in 1st grade. They all need help so I figure I can help myself if they need it more. If I had one teacher and I was the only student, that would make things easier.

Pschyo, school isn't the only place you make friends. Church, if you get a job the people who work with you, etc. places you go all the time. I don't go anywhere, but, I go to the library all the time since I live pretty close to it. I see people there all the time that I saw the day before that. I have a lot of friends there, but they're all older than me >:/. (Usually when I make a friend my age, they are really stupid :l. Not always, though).

I don't need to worry at all about my social life. I don't really talk to many people anyways. It's not like I'm going to start crying over how many friends I have or anything. If I feel lonely, I can just go easily make friends at the library or something, my friends at my public school all smoked, did drugs, etc.. Almost got me into it. Most public schools are like that, but there are rarely private schools like that.

That's one reason why I hate public school.

EDIT: Sorry, I keep spelling things wrong, I'm tired D:

Public.

I'd have to be a snob to go to private and an antisocial freak to be homeschooled.

loljk I wish I could afford private.
And being self taught wouldn't be bad.

;(

Private School is pretty much like a tame public school. I can't afford it, but by my uncle's money, I'm getting in. That's besides the point. I've done all three - public school, homeschool, and private school. I excelled at homeschool, I'm doing okay in Private School (it's more challenging than when I challenged myself in homeschool), but in Public School, it was so hard to learn because there was always a disruption in the class.

i've gone to public school my whole life, and there's been some variation in how much i like it

primary=good
junior=pretty bad
intermediate=neutral

but i'd have to say i'd like homeschooling best. i've never been homeschooled but it seems like it would be a lot better than public school.

lastly, i would hate private school. anything that requires that i wear a uniform (unless its a good one) = autodislike

but my parents wont let me be homeschooled because they're like "OH YOU DON'T GET ENOUGH SOCIAL INTERACTION AS IT IS I WOULD NEVER DO THAT!!1"

and yeah, friends aren't really an issue for me. hell, i wouldn't even care if i had none. the internet is my friend.

/internet antisocial kid

At least now you can piss whenever you want, watch tv when you do homework, eat food, listen to music whenever.

I promised my mom I'd make it feel like it's really school for me. She made bathroom passes, no joke. I did this so she wouldn't make me go back to my old public school D:

I don't really associate with many of the students at the high school because of this fact. Most of my close friends turned to drugs, drinking, or too much partying. Hell, one person I was VERY close with last year turned into a whole different person this year.

I'm like you though, I don't need too many friends. I won't go and cry if I have lonely. All I need is a few awesome friends and I'm fine. Lately, I've only been hanging out with one I've known since we both were babies since the others don't really talk to me much anymore (Those being the ones who turned a 180 in life and is acting like they never knew me).

I know. My friend that I knew before I started going to public school (I started going to her school :o) was doing drugs. I went up to her at lunch and was like "Hey Mia! Long time no see ^^" she was sitting next to some *censored.7.61* and was like "Uhhh, who are you?" and they all started laughing. I knew she was doing it on perpose so I left .-.

Dude...this is basically the most awesome part about homeschooling. :) It actually goes hand-in-hand with the whole "opinionated" thing...by not doing things like everyone else, you're automatically not conforming. And if you don't conform w/ society, chances are your opinions/tastes will also be pretty unique...

And trust me, some have definitely had problems with my mindset. You know what I tell them? "Screw you!" ;)

I also like homeschooling because you don't turn around and see someone staring at you cause they think you're weird. By weird, I mean gothic :/

Don't forget that PE is not brutal to the non-athletic kids like me (hell, I've got noodle arms) or no PE at all.

No one can cheat on a test... 'cept when my dog started looking at my paper... Then, while I was trying to get her to stop, the cat stole my pencil. It's a conspiracy! :yay:
Odd homeschool story. ^^^
