The holidays are coming, and so are TBT happenings! We have a few announcements for you about Christmas, rules update progress, and a new New Year's Event!

Christmas Lights

The Christmas Lights collectibles are back in time to decorate for the holidays! These special lights only appear during the holiday season and can only be gifted to other members. However, as announced earlier in the year, they are no longer temporary, so while they will be hidden from your inventory on January 6th, you'll still be able to decorate with the same lights next year! They can be purchased in the shop for 5 bells and gifted to any other member starting now until December 25th. If you're looking to find other members to exchange lights with, feel free to use the TBT Marketplace board.

Holiday Backdrops

Four holiday backdrops are now available, including two recurring and two single-use. Backdrops are designs that appear behind your profile details with all of your posts on the forum. Both versions can be displayed until January 6th. Recurring backdrops can be used seasonally, while single-use backdrops are temporary and will be removed from your inventory on that day. This holiday season, the following backdrops are returning:

Rules Update Progress

As we have mentioned before, reworking our rules has been one of our primary projects in the last few months. Our goal has been to make them clearer and more detailed, especially because our current list of rules, which hasn't had a major update in many years, touches on certain topics rather concisely. Some rules will also be added, such as prohibiting political discussions. We have been making steady progress and have many sections written out, but in pieces. While the new rules are fairly elaborate, we are structuring them across multiple pages to prevent them from being overwhelming for members. The main page will act as a general rulebook, linking to other pages that go into more detail about specific rules. Our current plan is to roll out these new rules next weekend, but to dedicate time in January and February to continue working on additional touchups as needed.

New Year's Event

While staff members have been focused on other projects, such as the rules updates, and other staff members have been on hiatus, we know many of you have been itching to participate in TBT events again, and we've been trying hard to fit one into the schedule. The time has finally come! This year, we've decided to host a small New Year's Event, a first for TBT! Currently, this is scheduled to take place from December 27th - January 10th. However, please keep in mind that this won't be one of our typical giant events like we hosted last year. Either way, we hope it will be a good way to keep busy until the big New Horizons update!

Upcoming Dates

Here's TBT's current schedule based on the announcements above:
  • December 21: Forum rules update rollout
  • December 25th: Christmas surprise
  • December 27th: New Year's event starts
  • January 6th: Backrops and Christmas Lights disappear
  • January 10th: New Year's event ends
  • January 15th: New Horizons 3.0 update and Switch 2 edition
  • January/February: More announcements, further rules polishing
With these dates now announced, I'm headed back to Santa's Workshop TBT's planning boards with the rest of the staff to continue making progress towards these goals. Happy holidays!

I love sending the lights out to people, glad they're out in the shop now! Loved them last year, and glad we get to keep them for each Christmas.

Can't wait for the new year's event, too, sounds fun!

Thparkling Thermoshpere... I will appreciate you from afar... SJ, thank you so much!

Funnily enough, I was helping my mum with the christmas lights today and then I see this!
Lovely to see an update, and loving the holly background! New Years Event sounds fun! Can't wait to see more updates coming soon.

A mostly welcome update.

While it's a shame that there won't be as many Christmas festivities as there have been in past years, it is both understandable and, honestly, kind of a relief on a personal level to not have to try to balance forum events with my usual cookie baking and general holiday preparations. Truthfully, this year has been pretty terrible on a personal and societal level, so I'm running near empty on Christmas cheer this holiday season. I'm still doing what I can to get what enjoyment I can out of the season though. As such, I look forward to seeing what the Christmas Surprise will be on the 25th.

Tying into the above, without the usual events, it's also a bit of a relief to not have too much competition for my low TBT this Christmas season. I've had to pass on the Gingerbread Gang backdrop in the past because I had to preserve my TBT, but I think I'll grab it this year.

I'm also looking forward to the New Year's event and the updates to the forum rules.

I will say that there is one thing I'm not particularly comfortable with, which is why I started out the post saying that it's a mostly welcome update. I noticed the mention of prohibiting political discussion. I can understand some of the appeal of this, but we are also in unprecedented times and being able to spread awareness of issues that can affect, have affected, and/or will affect members of the community and/or their loved ones feels valuable and important to me. From matters like US program cuts that can affect affordable food, housing, health care etc., to tariffs, to the censoring of the Internet like in the UK's Online Safety Act and which may come to the US in the forms of various bills like the Kids Online Safety Act. Heck, the Online Safety Act even directly affected the forum by making images hosted of imgur not work properly on the forum for members living in the UK. I know politics are a minefield, especially now, but prohibition feels like throwing the baby out with the bath water to me. I don't want to derail the thread though, so I might have to Contact the Staff if I think of more to say about it, though I've basically conveyed the gist of it. I'd also encourage anyone else with thoughts on this matter to follow suit and Contact the Staff (or whatever other method Staff prefers) instead of making this thread devolve into chaos.

Happy Holidays, everybody.

Oh yes I miss TBT-Events and the christmasy feeling around this time. Looking forward to what is coming our way.

I wish everyone a magical christmas time ✨🎄
