I haven't played for a long while as I burned out on the game. however I think I'm ready to start a new town! what are some ways I can make the game "fresh"? I'm worried about getting burned out really quickly! do you make goals for yourself when you start a new town? any ideas are helpful :>

hmm.. what you can do is to look for some inspiration in dream towns or on tumblr or so and get some nice decorating ideas you can do in your town, something you'd get excited over

I don't really get bored of animal crossing, i just usually stop playing for no reason, but goals are a good idea if you think you're likely to get bored and tired with it. that can be the usual goals like achieving a perfect town, striving to get all the badges etc. or getting dream villagers, but for me, seeing other people's achievements/creativity usually inspires me to play more, I love to visit really nice and creative dream towns and look at/follow animal crossing blogs on tumblr (like lunachii said), it inspires me to really work towards having an amazing town

Animal crossing has several different things for you to focus on. For example, you might be focused on catching every bug in the game right now, but you could move on to upgrading & designing your house, getting all of your dream villagers, landscapibg your town, unlocking every k.k. song, the list goes on! I was kind of like you, my first town focused solely on making bells, and upgrading my house & getting all gracie furniture, which is nice but after I reset I like designing my house much more and I think it looks much better than it did before. I've also started collecting all of my dreamies & landscaping. It's a nice long term goal to look forward to and I've had alot of fun making my town just how I want it. I hope this helped!

If I were you, I'd just take things very slow and try to set some goals with myself (i.e, no time traveling, no plot resetting, obtain dreamies by campsite or random move in only) and just play the game how it was meant to be played. No stress over getting a perfect town right away or anything like that. Plan up a town theme that is unique and one you've never done before, make an apocalypse town or futuristic one or a town set in a certain era. Create stories out of the villagers, pair them up, decide who likes who best or which villagers are enemies. I find that helps me keep at the game and I've yet to get bored!
You could try to make it so that your villagers have well decorated houses! It's very easy for villagers homes to spin out of control into a nightmare, and while it could be a difficult task, you could try to do your very best to always give them really nice stuff through the mail and when they request new furniture until they have perfect houses.
Cycle a bunch of villagers through your town and get pwp suggestions from them before you start building things and landscaping. When you have all the pwps you want, build them and move your favorite 10 villagers in. Then landscape around your pwps and villager houses. Fill the remaining space in your town with fruit trees, bamboo, shrubs and flowers of your choice and decorate your beaches. You can also interact with other players that really like the game by going to CT or posting here (finding people that play regularly is good motivation to keep playing). Lastly, you can complete, and decorate your museum and earn all the badges! Doing any one of these things will keep you busy xD

All of the suggestions here have been great. I wanted to add that changing up your path every season is a good way to keep the game fresh without having to reset. I personally use paths that only take 5 or less slots (I give a little more leeway with water paths). It's also very easy to switch paths without it being a hassle. There's so many paths you can mix and match with each other.
