Alright, so I just demolished my stone bridge since I've always wanted a wooden one. So I did, and now I'm having problems placing the wooden one. Poncho moved in nearby the stone bridge while I still had one, and now I'm placing the bridge and Isabelle keeps saying, "It's too close to a resident's home." I'm confused as to why she said that since my bridge was just fine before. Can anybody think of why she said that? My town is almost finished and this is the only spot open for a bridge since this stone bridge was here since my town started.

You can't place a bridge too close to a villagers home, but a villager can place their home close to the bridge. So you're gonna have to wait until he leaves to place a bridge there. #ACNL logic

You need two rows of five spaces (tiles) on both sides of the river to build a bridge.
Ex:

XXXXXBBXXXXX
XXXXXBBXXXXX

But after the bridge is built it only needs two spaces between it and the house/PWP.
Ex:

OOOXXBBXXOOO
OOOXXBBXXOOO

I had the exact same problem before. I had to make Biskit move out in my old town so I could fix my brige to be straight instead of diagonal..
I think it's pretty stupid how much empty room there has to be to build a bridge =/ why does game let villager move in near the bridge in the first place if you can't build a new one after they move in close to it??? Ugh >.<

This... It happened to me too... I don't understand the game sometimes... They don't make sense. #ACNL logic

You can find a fairly useful guide here, it shows the (ridiculous) amount of space required to build your bridge, at all possible angles. Click the spoilers to view the images!
