Help- Add friends?

Need help.. I have added people to my switch friends and they have visited my island using online play BUT they aren't showing up in my friend list on the phone app.... how do I add friends on the phone app?

if I remember correctly, there's a on/off function on the phone and friends list! I would have to look when I go in game later

There is, I checked for you

I don’t do a lot of online playing, but from my research, the on/off function enables a communication feature where you can send and receive messages.
(Jenny is themysterybidder BTW)

Oh hmmm. True, that's mainly for communicating via phone.
That's strange though. They should pop up on your phone.. if you try to send them a letter, do they pop up?

It appears you have to also visit their island for you guys to be friends at all!
